"Long ago, when the world was young, porcupines had no quills.

One day, when Porcupine – (Pȟahíŋ) was in the woods, Bear came along and wanted to eat him. But, Porcupine climbed to the top of a tree and was safe.

The next day, when Porcupine was under a hawthorn tree, he noticed how the thorns pricked him. He had an idea. He broke off some of the branches of the hawthorn and put them on his back. Then, he went into the woods to wait for Bear.

When Bear sprang on Porcupine, the little animal just curled himself up in a ball. Bear had to go away, for the thorns pricked him too much.

Iktómi (spider-trickster spirit, and a cultural hero for the Lakota people) saw what happened. He called Porcupine to him and asked, “How did you know that trick?”

“I am always in danger when Bear comes along,” replied Porcupine. “When I saw those thorns, I thought I would use them.”

So Iktómi took some branches from the hawthorn tree and peeled off the bark until they were white. Then he put some clay on the back of the Porcupine, stuck the thorns in it, and made the creation a part of his skin.

“Now go into the woods,” said Iktómi.

Porcupine obeyed, and Iktómi hid behind a tree.

Soon Wolf came along. He sprang on Porcupine and then ran away, howling.

Bear came along, but he did not get near Porcupine. He was afraid of those thorns.

That is why all porcupines have quills today."

"What I saw almost stopped my breath. The boulder field fell away in a saucer-shaped depression; picking their way slowly across it, three great rams walked single-file in majestic parade. The smallest was a full-curl ram with horns big enough to make any hunter proud. The second was even bigger, while the leader carried a head beyond the wildest dream. His great horns curled around past the bridge of his nose and were tremendously massive and heavy, with the tips broomed off to broad points. It was by far the biggest head I had seen on any sheep, and I had trouble believing my eyes. ...This, I believe, was the finest bighorn head ever taken by a sportsman in North America"

"A loud, high-pitched pantherine shriek. The clatter of violently disturbed rocks. A long swift dark shape momentarily eclipsed the stars above Rawley’s boulder. Then his sudden, anguished cry of rage . . . All this in a heartbeat.

The leopard had him, and he had her. I saw them for an instant, standing and swaying together like lovers, the leopard clutched in Rawley’s strong embrace, her hind claws working at his abdomen. But of course I couldn’t shoot for fear of hitting him. Then they toppled down into the nullah. I ran over to the edge and peered down, rifle at my shoulder.

“There she was—an elongate streak heading up the far side of the declivity. I swung with her and fired . . .”

Some of Jones' work is...fanciful shall we say, but entertaining nonetheless, BB
