because I dont want to

I'm taking clones today, and I will label them up. The mothers will carry on vegin afterwards. When they show sex in veg I'll kill the relevant clones or keep some alive for pollen.

I'm not going to be swapping back n forth on light times and stressing the plants out. The clones when they have taken wont make it to flowering for some time as I will want to veg them and take clones from them as well. I want my clones to have the veg hormones as well as the flowering ones.

Wotcha gonna go for Skunky? A nice Sub Cool variety perhaps? An unknown? A tried and tested ?

I know what I'm gonna have a crack at next - I think I'm ready!

why dont u jus take ur clones put them into flower 2 find out if u have a male or female mother
Because he's knowledgeable and experienced enough not to make basic 'newb' errors - he's doing it the right way - not stressing the plant unduly because he wants to keep one as a mother.

Just because some of the ignorant 'twonks' on here think it's cool to do what you suggest doesn't make it the right way, nor very advisable to do.

Keep up the good work NGT - interesting journal.

I'd have to tick two of those boxes. sub cool variety and a tried and tested one, Space Queen.

So last night I took a few clones.

I had presoaked the cubes in 5.5 water and drained them so they were fairly light but still had moisture in them.

The equipment i used to take the clones were

clonex
scalpel
propagator
rockwool cubes ph soaked
bucket of ph adjusted water (6.0 is what i ph'd to)

So i have all my equipment laid out ready to begin.

I start off by having a labeling system, so you know which clones came from where. otherwise they will all get mixed up and you wont know which ones are male or not.

I'm using coloured dots, so each parent has a different colour spot, and then the clones will have the same to match up.

I use the scalpel to remove the branches that I want to clone. Doing only one plant at a time so as not to mix them up. I like to take fairly small clones because i believe they take easier.

Once i have taken a clone, i chuck it straight in the bucket of ph 6 water. Once I have finished taking all the clones I can from one plant, its time to get these planted.

Holding the cutting underwater, i make a 45 deg cut. when i take it out i use the scalpel and make a 5mm incision into the underneath of the stem. I then take the sharp point of the scalpel and run it up the side of the stem, only about 1cm. Not to cut through just to slice the outer skin of the stem.

I then place the cutting in the clonex and leave it there while i prepare the next one.

When the next one is ready to go in the clonex, I take the previous one out and put it into the rockwool, after putting it in the first time, i take it back out and re dip in clonex.

After having gone through the entire batch of clone and getting them planted, i then use a syringe to fill the whole in the rockwool around the stem with clonex.

The water that was in the bucket that i was throwing the clones into has now become the initial spray. I filled up my spray bottle with it and then misted the plants.

The clones will be receiving 24 hours of lighting per day, 12 hours of 250w 6400k cfl lighting and for the other 12 hours they will be using the light from a 400w mh.

If the light source is too intense for the clones, what will happen is that they will need to drink lots more water to survive as the foliar feeding will not be enough under the intenseness.

To counteract this I am keeping them at around 3 foot away from the cfl and about 5 foot away from the metal halide.
