Whether they trust him or don't trust him, whether he gives them orders or they give him orders, he still organized the plan to blow up the Pentagon and the twin towers, and the Taliban still shielded him and his camps. That makes them both guilty enough to be on the receiving end of some big ass bombs. If they get annoyed at getting blown up, maybe they'll reconsider blowing *us* up. If not, we've got lots of bombs and factories to build more.
I'm not suggesting we assume control of Afghanistan. We're not doing any empire building. Iraq is increasingly in Iraqi control now, and Afghanistan's government isn't yet quite so capable on their own, but they will be someday, and then we'll be gone. We aren't Great Britain trying to subjugate India here; we're just there to blow up the people that did some blowing up of our people, then we'll be on our way.
I think it's important that when someone blows up a few thousand Americans, we go send them back to the stone age. That's just an opinion though. I suppose there are some who think that we should just roll over.
The pashtuns aren't our enemy unless they shoot at us, or protect bin Laden, or protect the Taliban (who protected bin Laden). If they stick to their goat herding or whatever, I'm sure they'll be fine. If they pick up a gun and point it at our soldiers, well, then they might have some bullet-related problems with us.
