Ballast problem

About two weeks ago the fans on my 400W Future-Brite were on super high and were very loud. Now they're barely working and the ballast is getting really hot. I removed it from the shelf inside the grow space and put it outside, but the fans are barely running. I opened it up and cleaned the dust off, but that didn't help at all. When the ballast has power to it, I can push the fans with a pencil and they'll start up, but barely push any air. Is this thing gonna burn out on me?

Any ideas on what to do?!

where did you get it?

I got it off of craigs list... am I f*cked? What do the fans in the ballast run on (voltage)? If it's a 12 I could just hook up a computer fan to it and hopefully keep it from burning out on me.

if i was you i wouldnt fuck with anything internal unless you know what your doing...

for example, fan can run off 9vdc,12 V dc, 24 V dc, 120vac etc etc.... you would have to open it up and read the specs on the fan...... if you dont know electronics i cant advise such a endeavor.

plus if theres something wrong with a simple pc fan, whos so say theres not other things wrong or going wrong.

idk, just my opinions brotherman.

sorry, and good luck:peace:

If that's the only problem then just put a table top fan next to it and that'll keep it cool, I always use one. If there are other problems like the bulb acting funny, don't use it. It could be dangerous and catch something on fire. You may want to consider disconnecting the internal fan. If it's got a problem, you don't want power to it. Be careful though. Depending on your ballast, there could be residual power inside.
