Bag Seed Tent Grow

Living in remote outback Australia means if you want to smoke you pay. And pay you do. $500 AUD an ounce. And the quality is often sub par but like I said if you want to smoke you pay.
Well after much browsing, reading and the wife saying no, (easier to ask for forgiveness than permission) I took a friend up on the offer of a grow tent setup for the cost of a few oz down the track.

Setup consists of:

900x900x1600 GrowRite Tent
Marshydro TS1000 LED Light
GrowLush 100mm Exhaust Fan
150mm 3 Speed Fan
Temp/Humidity Display
Manual Timer

Growing Media: Soil - Osmacote Premium

Seeds: Random Strain "Pick n Mix" - I have been getting some pretty good buds through a regular guy for about 5 years. Sometimes good weed with seeds come along and end up in a tin. The strain has always been the same and the quality good but supply and bud quality is poor. (not cured properly, stringy and rushed) Also the odd random seed from other source's.

12th March: 1 humble little seedling. Just threw a seed into dirt and potting mix blend. Exhaust fan was not pushing air up and out of the tent. Light was too close to seedling. Humidity was low 10% and temp was high 39-42 degrees Celsius (gets to 45+ degrees here in summer). Moved light to about 500mm and secured fan to top of tent. Started misting the tent with water 3-4 times a day to maintain humidity around 50-60%. Tried a few other methods of temp control and have used a combination of darkened room and air conditioning to keep temps at about 27-35 degrees.

Then come the next batch of seedlings. Started 6 promising looking seeds in Jiffy blocks and let them break surface before moving into the tent. 2 days later roots appeared and they were moved into bigger pots with quality soil. 3 were placed into large pots with 3 in small. Soon the 3 in the smaller pots started stretching for light as they were 100mm lower then the others. Transplanted them into larger pots. Original seedling needed topping to keep height inline with others. Responded well to topping so LST for fun. Other 6 will just be topped.

5th April: Current stage. 6 in big pots are 3 weeks old. Blue pot is original seedling topped and LST.

After being topped and LST:

Just left to grow in soil. No nutrients as soil has it in.

Everything except the temp. sounds good to me. Did you mention water quality or ph, these are important. Keep trying and keep a fairly stable environment with temp and humidity controlled. I try to keep the temp. under 30 if possible. Growing "mystery weed" is a risk I am just not willing to take. I sometimes forget what I planted but at least I know it's something I bought and I only buy good quality seeds. Maybe this isn't something you have control over just now and that's OK too. Best of luck down there.

Thanks. 18/6 set for lights off at the hottest time of day. Nights and days are getting cooler so hopefully temps not an issue next few months. Looking at DWC for next grow.

I'll follow along as a fellow down under farmer!

There are a couple of sites you can get seeds in Australia without having to go overseas.

Hopefully you get some good weather and wishing you many ladies!

Thanks. I'll look into other seed suppliers once I've got the hang of light and temp. Don't want to waste good seeds on an inexperienced grow. Learn the ropes to grow good dope.

8th April: Temp still being an issue. As high as 38 degrees Celsius yesterday. Exhaust fan just not cutting it. Upgrade!

Have negative pressure in tent with great air flow. Not sure on brand of fan. 60w, 2250rpm, unknown cfm. Moves lots of air though. Hopefully now temp might not be an issue. Can keep outside temp to about 30 degrees so with good air flow tent should remain the same as outside room temp.

Plants have suffered a bit of heat stress with high temps and some leaves have cupped upwards. Not all leaves and at different heights so I assume heat not light is the problem. Gave them their first nutrients. Powerfeed seaweed plant nutrients at 1/2 recomended dosage. Read somewhere about seaweed tonics are good for stressed plants and the garden loves it. Other then a bit of heat stress plants are healthy.

Topped 2 larger plants while the others catch up. About 4-5 weeks more of veg and I'll filp.
Plant that was topped and LST has responded well showing 12 possible bud sites. Might top those and just see what comes of it.

After much browsing and reading here on RIU I have decided to set up a DWC/bubbleponics 4 pot grow for the next run. Seems like a good small tent combo.

April 11th: Have managed to keep temp low to about 27ish degrees during hottest part of day. AC needs to be on about 6 hours a day but tent remains pretty stable.
Have seen some good growth since first post. Plants have responded well to more air flow and lower temps.
Before: 5th with high temps and shitty extraction fan.

Current: 6 days later. What a difference a drop in temp makes. Veg has finally started to love the conditions. Plants look a little droopy due to being a bit dry. But the canopy is coming in nice.20210411_135829.jpg

LST the 2 larger plants I topped to keep canopy at same height and let more light hit those lower parts of the plant.

Gave them a drink just before lights off. Still suffering a bit of a heat stress hangover with some of the "taco" leaves not fully recovering.

Not sure if they do. Is it worth removing them to let the plant focus energy into rest of plant?
Also gave them a 1/2 recommended dose of "powerfeed" seaweed growth supplement via foliar as a bit of stress relief before lights out.

16th April: Quick update on veg progress. All plants are responding well to changes in temp. Canopy filling in the 3x3 space fairly even. Except 1, its looking sad and stunted. No signs of any preflowers or balls yet. Alternating nodes are starting to form.20210416_064156.jpg

April 23rd. Flipped to 12/12 on the 18th. Plants responded well to flip. Stretch is coming on nice.

Signs of preflowers (I think). Look like balls to me.

On the right hand branch node. Tiny but there. Any ideas anyone. I'll try for a better pick once lights come back on.

Don't do DWC if your Temps are high. You will need a water chiller to keep the water at or as close as possible to 60F or 15.55C. The warmer the water is the less dissolved oxygen. Low oxygen levels and warm Temps at the roots will certainly lead you to root problems and a bad experience with hydroponics.

That's alot of sativa you got there, be prepared for a 12+ week flower phase. If you can get another fan in the opposite corner that will help encourage flower sites and promote good transpiration. Cannabis being a wind pollinated plant will sense increased air movements on its terminal sites and dedicate them for flowering mid plant. This increased air through the plants helps to turn what would be popcorn buds into harvestable buds. Light intensity and penatration also influence this, but air is a major factor as well.

Your leaves are canoeing, this is the plants way at maximizing its surface area to shed water or transpire. Must have more air movement and ventilation should be ran non stop 24/7

Hey mate how's the grow going?
Going well so far. Have been super busy with work so haven't posted in a while. Out of the 7 plants 3 had balls and were pulled. 4 females showing flowers. Have had better luck with temp as night temps have been cool at about 11-15 Celsius. Plants have stretched nice. Might have flipped a bit early and they have only in the last 2 week's have shown their sex. Looking forward to watching those sweet buds growing.received_806980583559495.jpegreceived_3001736806711895.jpeg
