badly mistreated clones saved by vermicompost extract

This is the story of badly mistreated clones getting an enormous boost from vermicompost extract :D

I took clones off a SensiSeeds Northern Lights #5 x Haze girl called Dawn in mid-December and kind of forgot them under horrid conditions - low light, cold temperatures, insufficient aeration...

By the time I gave them some attention in mid-January, the survivors had begun getting traces of beginning PM, one of them grew into the spiral of the 2700k CFL I had added in as a temporary improvement (whilst hunting for better veg lights for my shelf), burning off a leaf in the attempt to get more light, and both were trying to go into flower.
2016-01-20_topping1_t+tb.JPG

So I started out by topping both of them to get them onto an even level and cutting away a good part of the plants that had begun to bloom, and gave them 2 weeks of 24/0 110W CFL lights and another 16/8 to get them to reveg.

It wasn't easy, they were really stubborn, and the retarded growth they put out kept my mind wandering to the thought of just killing them both lol

But my plan had been to use these clones to experiment with mainlining, so I decided to keep going.
I now think it's not a good idea to mainline clones that already have alternating leaves. At least I couldn't get them to go back to symmetrical growth despite training.

On reveg day 9 and a fair amount of trimming and training:

Finally, after 31 days of reveg, the girls got their "not-really-mainlines" pinned down, a good trim,
11L pots of recycled soil (nothing fancy, just a 50:50 mix of soil from an earlier grow, compost-heavy potting mix, and 1/3 lavarock), and went into my grow closet with a proper 150W MH light and good ventilation.

Veg day 1 on March 2:

They liked that :p Ten days later:

However, I still found them weakish and flimsy, was unsure the long flower time of the nl5xhaze was going to be worth the electricity, and found my mind wandering back to the possibility of chop and toss  lol

So I gave them 2 rounds of vermicompost extract a week apart.
I chose extract over adding the compost itself because I only have one not-quite-done-yet tray of vermicompost going at the mo AND also wanted to foliar to make sure the foliage is nicely covered with microorganisms too.
To make the extract, I took a handful of that vermicompost, put it into a cloth bag and "massaged" the microorganisms into a pail with about 5L tap water until it had this nice tawny color somewhere between fulvic and humic acid color, and foliar sprayed and watered the plants with that. (There was lots left over, so my other house plants also got spoiled).

Sadly, I wasn't really able to record their reaction in pictures - it was like a big sigh of relief and outbreak of joy  Their growth from one extract foliar/feeding to the next:

And a canopy that looks like something I want to let go into bloom haha!
2016-03-19_foliar-top-b.JPG

That was last Saturday.
I've switched the light schedule to 12/12 and added in my 200W CFL - still 6500°K to match the 150W MH, which I'm leaving in for a week to slow the stretch.
My height is limited in the closet and they're starting to go bonkers now they're well-provided for :-D

I plan to just let them do their thing from here -- maybe just a tiensy bit of lollipopping, which I'll decide on on Saturday - when I'll also update how they're doing now.
Cheers!:bigjoint:

Ahhh, that mixed feeling of satisfaction and relief when you open the door and see all growth related problems improving. :D Glad it worked out for you calliandra, nice looking manifolds by the way, going to be really interesting watching them flower.
Thanks! :D
Yeah it's going to be really interesting to compare branches (some are thick, some thin, since growth didn't get redistributed properly as it should when mainlining) AND plants, Tinkerbell is 4-way so not really mainlined, whilst Tina is (even though lopsidedly), and I'm already seeing how those mainlined branches are taking off way more quickly!

In my experience any time a woman does any kind of "massaging",good things happen.

This thread is just further proof.

G/j bringing them back calliandra.
LMAO good one, Resin, almost fell off my chair laughing there!

What a fantastic gardener you are, I wish I knew half of what you know and was as good with my fingers as you! They are looking quality and can't wait to see them in a few week when they start budding. All the best for the grow, may they grow big and smelly

And flourishing they are, to the degree that Tinkerbell got a few of her leaves burned by growing into the bulb whilst I wasn't watching yesterday lol

Here's how they look today - before & after I cleared a bit of the bottom growth, and pinned a few branches down/apart:
2016-03-26_a-top (1).JPG 2016-03-26_a-top (2).JPG

and from the side - I think they grew like 15cm this week but more importantly, they are now looking like real plants! :weed:
2016-03-26_b-side (1).JPG 2016-03-26_b-side (2).JPG

Looking at them, I do think that in future, I will only be growing 1 plant in this closet when I have big strains like the nl5xhaze going, even at danger of them feeling lonely in there. Things are just too tight for my taste, I can hardly squeeze the fan in and the branches growing flush with the walls make the poor plants look cramped.

In any case, they just got switched to HPS too - they're starting to show first pistils, so official flower phase will be starting in the course of the week.
Cheers!

I've been looking at this strain and the NL5xHazexKali Mist, and was just wondering how these smell during flower? Any skunk to them or are they more neutral or tropical?

Plants looks great by the way.

They are looking fantastic, I love the shape of the manifolds at the bottom, I was always intrigued how it would look with clones.
As you know I do love a one plant grow, and seeing how much can be achieved from it! How will you go about doing one plant, will you use a massive pot?

Are 15ltr pots your growing in ? Is the medium coco or soil?
These are just 11L, which is a tad too small for my taste, but I didn't want to invest in another larger pot (which is a good thing, seeing that I've decided to only grow 1 in there in future). And I'm using recycled soil on this one :)

Nope they're not skunky at all :)
But they did develop smells in phases (enough to make my carbon filter worthwhile having) - it was a whole bouquet of different smells, every day, sometimes more citrussy, sometimes more grapey, sometimes piney. Plus an undertone I would guess is typically haze (from what other people were saying, I have yet to grow a haze to compare ;) )

Actually I've been thinking clones that have begun alternating their side branches are ideal for scrogging :D I won't try mainlining one of those again though, it's a right pain!

Oh yes, I'll be using the 28L pot I had the 2 plants in on the last grow -- for starts haha!
I mean, just look at the roots in DWC, got to give them a chance to develop the same masses in soil too :bigjoint:

I wish I hadn't bloody started mainlining this one! lol this also has been a nightmare, although some of it is my fault! I should have just topped and LST'd. The DWC buckets are normally around 20/25 litres, so I think you could have a monster in that 28litre pot!

Yeah but you didn't know that, did you!
I think we have all learnt from your experience that training methods like mainlining may just not be for those 100% indica strains - I definitely will be approaching very cautiously if I ever grow a strain like that - so thanks for that!

Yeah i'm glad it has taught us a lesson, and hopefully someone sees it and it helps them make a decision. I need to get the Nitrogen issue under control as well, just can't wait to switch now! How are yours doing, have they got some lovely preflowers yet?

Nix pre, they're going nice and starry :D
I'm counting flower from March 31, here's a peek into the closet today, so day 3 of flower (yay it's crappy pix time again lol)

When I say "let them do their thing" it's literal, some days I don't even check on them, seeing I'm watering about every 2 days at the mo - so they stretched right into the light and got burned twice  lol

The canopy has stayed relatively uneven, the shorter apices corresponding pretty much to the weaker branches. I did do some tentative supercropping afterwards to get the tallest ones down a bit, but it doesn't feel right AND I don't really have any space I can train them to, so I only cropped down 3 branches to see how they handle it.

But healthwise, the girls are doing great - which is what this thread is about
I'm really curious to get a look at the microbial life in the soil now, hoping to get around to looking at a sample under the microscope in the course of the next week! :bigjoint:

Love the shape of the one on the right, is that one Tina?!

lol yeah I'm so cruel, smoked their mother in a pipe haha

Yep that's Tina, the one that actually looks a bit like a mainline. I've switched the placement so she is under the CFL side of the lighting, I figured since CFL light penetration is not so good I'd put the airier plant there.
Cheers!
