What LED's do you have and why are you still using them if they're junk? "600w of led will not replace a gavita DE 1kw, do not listen to manufacturers trying to sell you their equipment" is a false statement when referring to modern high end stuff and DIY, it might be correct if referring to junky blurple ripoff lights. Not all LED's are created equal. Reading a few of your own words is all the research I need to conclude you are talking out of your ass..
I have several different popular types , cree cxa 3050, cree cxb 3590 , cree xml series r/w combo, blurple panels as well one type i currently don't have are quantum boards but they are very similar to cree's xml series just more efficient. You won't replace a 1kw hps with a 600w led, you would significantly decrease your yield, you'd need more like 750w of premium quality to replace (by replace i mean you will get equal or larger harvests) .

try push ya cobkit into a hydro store in oz mate see what happens
See these? I put these together for about A$400 each. That's everything: LED boards, heatsinks, alloy frames, drivers, plugs, wiring - full house. That's 2x400W of LED (which can be cranked up to 500W) and it's performing as well as the 2x600W HPS bulbs that cost about the same each if you include bulbs, reflectors and digital ballasts.

When I mentioned to the local hydro shop what I was up to - and he knows me well enough over the years to know that I know what I'm doing (even though he rubbished my vertical HPS grows in the early days, he soon realised the error of his ways . . .) - he asked me the specs and rang his electronics mate and asked him to start building some prototypes.

I'll cut a long story short. The guy who owns the room below I'm helping out said "What the fuck are you doing? Don't help them! You want them to fail! If we can pull the same yields and quality with a third less power - and we never have to change another bulb (how's that working out for you? Those Gavita bulbs are worth up to $100 a pop and lose 10% of their output after just one grow) - then why would we give away our competitive advantage?".

Well, my mate is right. I couldn't give a flying fuck who believes us or not. I couldn't give a flying fuck if hydro stores copy us or not. I couldn't give a flying fuck what anyone else does, to be honest. We do what we do, and after 30 years of growing indoors, we know what works and what doesn't.

No disrespect mate, but you can talk all you want and grow with whatever makes you happy - it doesn't affect what we do one iota.

not sure about AU but in the US hydro stores mostly exist to sell stuff to people at exorbitant markup. many (if not most) look at their unit profit per fixture higher than their net benefit to the customer. As a result most are 1-3 steps behind on the current tech

if i didnt use rockwool and CO2 i probably would never go to the store.

light fixtures-build my own from current tech that hasnt even hit the mainstream market yet
bulbs- never need em
nutes- mix my own Jack's at $50 a year instead of buying trippy looking colorful packaging with mostly water

Hydro stores sell what cash croppers want to buy. They're not interested in cutting edge or high tech because most of their commercial customers are numptys.
They sell California light works junk here at the local hydro shops in colorado, they literally know nothing about LEDs or care to, biggest sellers seem to be CMH/DE hps.

All I'm saying is that they sell what sells, not necessarily what's best. The market determines where the profits are, and - like all new technologies - markets often lag. How many typewriters were sold in the early days of the home computer? Who the fuck buys typewriters these days? Long before the Vic 20 and the Commodore 64, techies were building their own computers in their garages - just like Wozniak and Jobs.

LEDs are the future. Walk into any hardware store or drive down any street and it is LEDs that now shine from warehouse roofs and street corners - not HIDs (unless you live somewhere undeveloped). They're already in people's homes and businesses. Because they are efficient. And they work. And they are only getting cheaper and better.
