Ok @Scotch089 this may piss you off but I got home from the Cup a couple hours ago with some new genetics. Got a Fire OG clone and some seeds that I'm really hoping something special comes out of them. Here's a list of the strains that created the parents of these beans,Chem D,Chem Sis,Sour Dubb,DMT(Sour Bubble) and Chocolate Diesel,they're called Darlins Dawg.

This girl is all natural from seed,no topping or major pruning,just some light cleanup down low and bent a few bottom branches to the side to get better lighting.

I've read some different opinions about whether or not buds need direct light to finish maturing. Do you find that when you trim your fan leaves heavily, that the lower buds mature more fully?

On GG#4 I mainly take the large fans at the node base only unless something is blocking light to another bud. It looks like a real heavy de-fol but most of that is the GG#4 structure,wide spaced nodes and branching with a great leaf to calyx ratio. My plants usually end up with very large and solid lower buds and no real fluffy stuff. My de-fol depends on the strain but I can't argue with the results,my lower buds are very mature and solid.

Good info. I've been trying different things including taking two cuts -- top colas first, then lower the lights and let the lower fluffy stuff have some more time. I'd rather just do one cut and have the buds be mature top to bottom, so I'll try more selective trimming next time. It does seem that the buds need access to direct light to fully mature, I have to work against my tendency to grow little jungles.

I usually take my plants down in two or three sessions over a week or more but it's more about having to spend that much time hand trimming in one session,I have a machine but prefer hand trimming.
