Gout is one of the most painful things ever. I used to get it in the balls of my feet, felt like broken bones grinding together. Part of it (for me) is I used to drink a LOT of beer on a daily basis. That was years ago, since then it travels...I've had it in my knee multiple times, in my wrist and elbows too. Finally went to the doctor a few years ago, I guess I have arthritis too so they say I have Gouty Arthritis. I take a pill daily that reduces my uric acid levels, those cause gout. Much better except I get mild flareups from time to time. Anti-inflamatory Idocin knock em out pretty quick, and I have Vicodin for the rare flareups that immobolize me. Last year my knee was so bad my wife had to wheel me into the doctor's office. He injected some cortisone into the knee, much better.
Check with your doc, Indocin kicks ass on the inflamation, and the uric acid reducing drugs helps a lot
