+1 for what the others said.

Try to sell the blurples if they are in good condition and go DIY with some COBS(citi, vero, cree) or led strips(samsung) - either provide similar efficiency

i'm growing some Mapacho (south american tobacco) and a mint mother for clones in a little 2x2 tent that wasn't being used, using 2 Luminus CMX22 3000K 90 @ 75W each

With a given TOTAL LED PPF output of 340.0 μmol/m^2/s in a given space of 0.371612 m^2.
Daily Light Integral (DLI) @ 1ft = 53 mol.
Totaling at 38 Watts/ft^2.
Total Power consumption = 150.0 Watts. Monthly power consumption = 73 kwh.
AVG PPFD @ 1.0ft = 915 μmol

I'm growing on a semi aeroponic system, following Stinkbud's guidelines, and a 55 gal reservoir.

The tobacco in the pictures is roughly 45 days old (from seed). I initially planed on just running the tobacco to test the effectiveness of stinkbud's design, since all of my previous grows have been on coco... but the tobacco (and everything else) grew so quickly and healthy that i might as well just let them finish and harvest. The fan leaves are bigger than my hands and i'm over 6' tall!

In case anybody is wondering i'm just using maxigro, a little cal mag here and there, recharge and ph up/down when necessary. I never go over 1.0 EC, and the PH stays pretty controled, and i've honestly haven't done a water change since i started the system a month ago. It's just too convenient.

To this point i've grown Chards, Basil, Lettuce, Spinach, Watercress, Mint, Tobacco hydroponically and under cobs and i couldn't be happier with the results. I'm going to post a few extra pics later on when i get home =]

Are you running the same nutrient regimen as Stinkbud's?
 
Here's a recent pic of the Tobacco plants, they're flowering already, and stretching like crazy. Almost touching the COBs & no signs of burning.

Recharge**

**Even if it sounds counter intuitive, recharge is actually pretty awesome for hydro. I used to get root rot without it, now my res is a little brown because of it, but there are no signs of root problems whatsoever.

Also, Stinkbud's PPM is way up above mine. I've never gone over 800 PPM and he sometimes feeds over 2000 to his plants. I think it all depends on the plants and the strains, they'll let you know if they're low or high on nutes :)

I foliar as directed or into the res on hydro at 2.5ml per gallon. One or two applications at res change and a foliar should have you back in business :hump:

I don't see any specific instructions for hydroponic applications. you think 2.5m per gallon? I have a 110 gallon res, it takes about 3 days to go though it. you think i should do a partial fill of the res and run it for a day, or for a full 3 days?

I would think a partial res would be sufficient.
Just a single foliar outdoor did the trick
 
I grow some tomatoes under COBs. All Vero 29 Gen 7, all actively cooled so I push them hard up to 100 w each. I have a 200w 2 cob 5000k fixture, couple 4000k fixtures and 3000k 3 cob light. They work beautifully

Moved one of my tomato to coir recently and its taken off. Just giving it 2tsp floranova grow and 1 gram epsom / gallon of tap water (330ppm). Its drinking about 3/4 gallon per day right now. Might try switching it over to Jacks 321 to save some money, hopefully it doesnt freak out about it.

Tomatoes are actually hard to grow in any kind of scale, they are very susceptible to diseases and pests.
Probably why farmers use so much poison.

this mangled plant in the front is attracting insect with the smells it gives off.

Yeah, its a cucumber that had a bad case of spider mites, strange they go after my cucs and leave other plants alone at the same time. I hit it hard with an oil spray and it killed most of the leaves. I have some new growth coming now. I took a clone off of it and have it isolated, gonna toss the plant outside to freeze I think, and any remaining spider mites!
 
Keep attacking it every five days for 2 weeks, when you don't see the mites anymore assume they are hiding and doing pushups.

I must say the yellow sweety pear tomatoes I planted this season is fruiting above expectation, in high heat and drought conditions. Its a bit of a thicker skin tomato, not quite sweet and sour enough for my liking.
 
haha, thats why Im tossing it outside. Im going to treat the clone regularly for the first week or two after it roots. Ive read a bleach water dip should work? Itll be easy when its small... Anything systemic that works for spider mites and wont give me cancer?
 
pyrethrin or salts of pottash in oils. If it is bad you will have to get it in a canned air bomb type bottle and gas the room out.
 
so growth medium, removing money from the equation, would a 8x8x8 rockwool cube get the best growth of any medium if all else was equal?

I think the problem lies in the ‘if all else was equal’ thought as that will mean different things for everyone. My thoughts are if everything was dialed in and equal, simple clay balls in an aquaponics setup would be ideal and one of the most forgiving.

aquaponics is a bit more then i want to do, lets say you had coco, soil, a big 8x8x8 rockwool cube and perilite. I will not talk clay balls because i DTW. what would you think would do the best for tomatoes?

these are all going to be in a 11 liter bato bucket, mostly because that is what i have for buckets

I believe a mix of coco/perlite and the rock wool block would yield similar performance.
From a cleanliness standpoint - the rock wool wins hands down, just pricey.
I am liking small rock wool cubes for cloning / germinating and then hydroton for larger root systems but I'm a water culture kind of guy :hump:
