i just switched over ligh from 18/6 to 24/0, 2 weeks into veg. i know alot of people perfer to run 24/0 and i`m sure its perfectly fine, with some due dillgence and such. but i do have 1 minor concern and could sue some advice from anyone who can help and/or have experece with running this ligt cycyle.

1) will my ballast and light be over worked? i have a 1000w digital, fan cooled dimmable ballast (apollo brand) and running MH at the moment. also am useing a wing reflector

Al;so i know all about the heat factor and such and am taking measures for that and also checking temps throughout the day. Actually the heat being produced by the light staying on is one of the main reasons (other then a higher growth rate) i am running at 24/0. it is starting to get cold where i live and my temps are dropping in my grow room, and when the lights are off the temps go way dwon (50s) and i have to run a heater to keep them into the 60s. iwas also running lights at night for the cold, and even with the lights off during the da y they dropped consiterably.

and as far as electricity useage is concerned the heater i am useing is 1250watt, and was running all 6 hrs the lights were off to maintain some heat. so in actuality just running the lights 24/0 is ctually saving me a little $.

any and all responses would be greatly appriciated.

Well I have an Apollo as well. Its been running 24/0 for 9ish months seems to be working great, I do know that turning lights on and off decreases their lifespan but I don't know about ballasts... I get nervous when I turn it off to clean my cool tube. But it always works like a champ

Also I'll say that in my opinion a dark period is good, my plants are happiest with 20/4

No. 18/6, the plant needs some darkness. There was a study done about this like 3 months ago, if I could find it I'd post it. It was about how imperative the dark period is to the light cycle.

You do not have to do a study to see the plants have a sleep like state. They need the "rest". Notice the plans leafs are drooping slightly, this is the resting state i am talking about. It's almost like the plant can sense the light is about to turn off. About 30 minutes after this photo was taken the lights turned off. I could post a photo when the lights come back on if your interested. The plant will be reaching up. Anyways I am sure you'll be okay with 24/0 however I am just sharing some information worth looking over.

They are alive and like us and need to rest, thats why you see them "sleeping" when you first turn light on, also HEAT, Does it stay hot 24 hours outside? no, You are mother nature, therefore you want to be JUST LIKE HER!! a plant does most of its "thinking" at night, THC production, ETC, also WHY run your bill up when there is no need? good luck on whatever you decide, Thanks!

I'm a firm believer of 18/6, I've gone 20/4 for a trial period, but went back to 18/6, plants need a time to rest, that's the way of nature, it's not commen for 24hr sunlight.

Ed rosenthal:

Marijuana plants photosynthesize as long as they receive light as well as water, air, nutrients and suitable temperature. Photosynthesis is the process in which plants use the energy from light (primarily in the blue and red spectrum's) to combine carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and water (H2O) to make sugar while releasing oxygen to the air.

Plants use sugars continuously to fuel metabolic processes (living) as well as for tissue building. The plant combines nitrogen (N) with the sugar to make amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. They are the substance of plant tissue. When the light is off, the plant's metabolic processes, respiration and growth, continue.

The plant can photosynthesize continuously so it produces the most energy and growth when the light is on, continuously. Continuous light does not stress the plant, which reacts somewhat mechanistically to it.

Plants under an 18-6 light-dark regimen are producing sugar only three quarters of the time. They are thus growing at only 75% of their potential. Leaving the light on continuously will result in bigger plants, faster, which leads to higher yields."

Going from 18/6 to 12/12 is a smoother transition into flowering.
24/7 changed over to 12/12 will slow growth when you are trying to kick it up a notch.

Heh.. it is a harvest-able crop, not my girlfriend..

I go 24 because it is EASY and can't be fucked up. For me, that is important. My plant's don't complain, rather they thrive.

Others own mileage may vary.

I have done both 24 and 18/6 and to me the growth was very similar or the same. What I do believe is that indoors, in an environment of high temps they need a break from the stress, and I could definitely use a break from paying to run over 3000w of power. Peace

Now if you had a consistent 3000w of 12/12 running combined with 24/0 for your veg, id imagine your electrical would shoot up at least 45 - 60 $. I already pay 500 - 600 for my room a month! at .35 KWH that shit gets expensive!

I've always wanted to do a side by side to see if it makes a difference. here's what I think - if your crop is indoor all the way, 24 hour light is probably fine. if you're starting plants inside and moving them outside, you risk them reverting to flowering when you put them out. but if you're just inside that's what you want - a rapid shift to flowering when you change the lights. as a matter of consideration, I have run lights 24 hours just to keep the plants warm since I had no other heat source. turning the light off for 6 hours would have caused an unacceptable tempy drop... I know everyone goes on about stress and how plants need rest - I'm not so sure. if you've ever seen a light dep crop - it's a trip to pull the cover off in the morning and see all the plants at attention, fully awake. why would the be awake if they were blacked out? it makes me wonder...

true story. also theyll tend to show sex a little bit sooner in veg if on an 18/6 vs 24/0

also...would it be okay to transition from 24/0 to 12/12? or should i run it 18/6 for a few days before switching to 12/12? a friend of mine said it`ll be cool just to switch straight from 24/0 to 12/12. i only grew indoros 2 times before runnign 18/6, so 24/0 (what im running now) is new to me... but i wante dto check with you guys here at RIU, I.e. dedicated growers and connassours:hump:
