Yes he has indeed. I think your first homegrown weed taste the sweetest. He is very happy and is looking to improve his yield on the next run. His wife is even happier because he has saved quite a bit of money providing his own smokables. After a couple of harvests I am going to introduce him to the wonderful world of hash making.

I know more experienced growers will balked at the results. In my head I was like " is that all?" I was looking to see if we dropped any. Of course he did admit to having a cheeky nibble or two while it was drying. I can not hold that against him though.

For one plant in soil and a first grow to boot I am so happy for him. Now we can focus on improving the results. Next run will have two plants and I have decided to rebuild the fixture for better spread. He is off on holiday soon with his family so that gives me a few weeks to tweak his fixture and give him a fighting chance to double his yield on the next grow. Good times ! :-D

Is he sticking with soil Will? Do you use soil yourself? I like Coco myself but to each his own. I'm sure with a few tweaks to this and a twist on that and some ubbergoobering he will be rocking the shit out of it yield wise. Good on ya for showing him the way!

Not just saved money, but likely avoided lungs full of an unholy cocktail of pesticides and/or fungus judging by the practices growers defend online. It horrifying, especially considering how many are growing in legal states.

I've really only DWCed, with a brief foray into low pressure "aeroponics", but I just ordered 6 Earthboxes after seeing what a couple DIY SIPs I experimented with this year in my vegetable garden did.

They caught up to and then proceeded to outyield my in-ground plants, despite being a late season trial, and 100F temps to contend with.

I guess my point is that for newbs, SIPs are easier than straight soil, no way to overwater, and grow nearly as fast as hydro. With the right soil mix and granular ferts, you can do water only all the way through, although I sneak in a little hydro nutes because I can't help myself.

I make my own soil, coco is one ingredient that is a constant in my mix. I have explained hydro to him and we both agreed that soil was the way to go. There is more room for error with organics and less upfront costs. I love creating a mini universe in the soil. billions of lifeforms all doing their thing. I agree wholeheartedly. You get what you give with gardening. I have taken a keen interest in SIPS of late. I have a few on the go in my little experimental cabinet. If I am honest when I looked over the list of guesses yours seemed the most probable. I must confess the other guesses were more appealing. :grin:.
The whole project has been rewarding for both of us and having a real life grow buddy is fun. He has the itch now and a good grasp of the basics. It will be onwards and upwards from here. I am certain you will have your parcel two weeks before Thanksgiving as promised.:lol:

SIPs might be an excellent blumat replacement, if you can dial in the wicking. What did you end up trying in the experimental cabinet as far as a soil mix? Going for water only?

The fact that they all left this morning for a music festival has saved my bacon. I have the house to myself for a few days to get things sorted. Up most of last night watching water drip into a bucket. Mucho coffee for breakfast and off to my buddy's to weigh his harvest. Then to work.:neutral:

For my SIPs I use a shallow reservoir because all my grow spaces have height restrictions https://www.rollitup.org/t/sip-thread-sub-irrigated-planter.904886/page-6#post-12578838 For the loft I need to find tubs with more volume but still low to the ground. I use pure coco compacted into the net pot wick and then my usual soil mix which changes slightly from time to time depending on what incredients I have available.

As far as water only I am going against convention on this and still feeding the odd fermented plant extract, SST, fulvic acid or any other liquid treat that comes to my attention.
I have been making my own Lacto serum for awhile now and I like to add it to the FPE the day before I feed. I think because my washing up bowl reservoirs have such a small volume that they do not have water in them long enough to get funky before fresh water is added again. Maybe not SIPs in the true sense of the concept.
It is early days yet in my SIPs experience so all I can say is at the moment it is looking promising.

To be honest the whole thing has been just as rewarding for me. He is a keen student and a great fella. He may also be introducing me to another new initiate who would like to learn. Just means I get to build more lights. :clap:

Because I was in a rush to weigh it up and get to work I did not think to take photos. I will try and pop around this week and snap a few.

The contest has been a great laugh and I think it would be fun to do it again. After his holiday we will do another run. I have got his next two plants vegging at the moment.
