A Case Full Of Glass

wish there was a way to rubberize glass spoons and pipes with like a clear coat of rubber or the same stuff they make clear tubing out of

unbreakable glass pipe

like couldnt you just melt clear rubber tubing and dip your pieces in it

sounds crazy but if somone could develop and easy to use clear rubber coating that would help prevent breakage by a great degree it would be money

i would buy those

for now im gonna tie my next glass pipe to my hand cuz i am a bumbling fool with no carpets

Maybe they can make pipes out of gorilla glass.....heres a demo

Unbreakable glass is easy. Just make sure its heated properly and there will be no thermal cracks or stress cracks. If its thick enough, you can drop it on the ground. If its really thick, you can drop it on concrete, but if it has a lot of design-work it might chip a bit of that off. Only really thin or poorly made pipes should crack or break when dropped reasonably.

Coating in rubber is a nifty thought, but the fun in glass is being able to see through it like its glass.

I am also VERY impressed with that piece. Not so much it's physical shape (cause I really don't like that part of it) but how busy, colorful, and layered the colors and paterns are. I appreciate it for the amount of time I imagine was put into the one piece... kinda like a custom paint job on a car that has lots of detailing that was done by hand.

I do really like that piece.

sssssshhhhh, it's a secret. ........ 006 (12).jpg 007 (12).jpg 009 (6).jpg

they call it a "stick-stack". sticks of color are stacked around a clear piece of tubing. then another clear piece of tubing is slid over it. then it is all melted together and pulled into a long tube. from there small sections are pulled off and twisted to make spirals. it's actually really easy. 005.jpg

it's not just black and white. it was made from the stick-stack pictured. it has blues and greens as well. :)

i guess my explanation was vague. it's a piece of stripped tubing wiggled back and forth.

See, that's pretty sweet. I've always wondered how patterns like that are made. Before you said something, I thought it was one solid piece of colored glass, and then other colors added to it and swirled around. Still to this day, I have no clue how they got the color into the marbles I used to play with as a kid.

So with that information, I'd imagine that to have a multi-layered piece like the other one shown previously, one would have to make very thin color sticks to fit so many different patterns under one cover? Do you have an idea how that was done? :)

you make it all big and pull it down thin. it's HELLA easy.

to make layers you just leave some sections clear. then blow out a ball and stick another ball inside it. then melt them together. it's really easy.

Sure. I don't care what he buys with the money I give him for whatever I buy. (which I guess also answers your 2nd question. ;) )

And for the record, I don't believe my "challenge" to Faded is styfling him in any kind of way; artistic or otherwise. I'll admit, I know next to nothing when it comes to blowing glass, but maybe you didn't know that he has already attempted a bong that was very near completion. So from my point of view; he's done it before, he can do it again. Maybe he just needed a little motivation to get the urge to try again.

That said...

*cracks whip*
YAW Faded!!! *cracks whip*
MAKE A BONG!!! YAW!!!

no balls.

bongsmilie
Sorry, didnt mean to insult your creative idea of creating a bong...and as far as pricing goes....you boast about buying his pieces....but would you buy his piece for $400 bucks? He would have to charge something like that for a bong....and Yes I did see the bong he made....what an unfortunate ending...but my point is still the same.

Let the artist be the artist. He has stated many times, and in the beginning of this thread he needs to work out his own ideas before taking in the clusterfuck of ideas coming from the masses

Dont take it as a personal attack man...it just seems every page someone says "fdd you should totally make bongs man!!!!" but no one really knows what it takes to make....and they 99% of the time arent ready to spend the $$$ for a good bong. Dont expect a $100 bong from FDD, his bongs would be worth much more, it takes effort and time.

Bah, whatever, I dont need to defend FDD, keep up his ass, im sure hell produce you a bong at request any day ;)
This is the last I'll say on this topic.

Firstly, I don't believe anyone here needs to be reminded of the potential cost of any one-off custom piece. Maybe for some it's news that something custom made does not fetch the same price as mass produced crap. And since we don't know one another, I'll inform you with a little bit of information about myself. I like to collect different things that are rare, one-offs, or limited production. I like to do that. It's fun. All it requires for me to buy it is for me to actually like the piece.

Furthermore, this is a growing site, correct? Well, SOME of us grow. I'm one of them. :) I also collect a retirement check, and hold a second job in addition to my 4,200W grow. I'm no stranger to spending money, nor do I believe Faded will charge anything unreasonable if he actually intends for the piece to be sold. BTW, depending on the piece, anything under $2,000 wouldn't be unreasonable, nor would it even dent the bank. ;)

But that's just me. It's all art. He can charge whatever the hell he feels. My apologies Fade for this minor distraction on your thread. bongsmilie
Your retirement check, and all your royalties impresses me

edit : that bong better blow your nuts for $2000 too ;) LOL

(fdd, you can just delete all my posts man, im not going to argue with this idiot)

so one of you is a grown man and the other a so called ''old man'' yet you both need to grow up.
seriously arguing solves nothing guys, no one wins no matter how much they say. like my mum used to say if you dont have anything nice to say then don't say nothing.
:peace::peace::peace:

it's rude for you to even suggest i need your help defending my work. you are doing it for you, not me. you can't stop until you "win".

i knew you'd reply. you are disrespectful. i should expect nothing less.

i simply ignore it. it has NO effect on me.

as a mod, i still see deleted posts. you have cluttered up my thread and refuse to stop. thanks for your help, my friend.

Soo.... awkward moment...

Faded, do you know how the color paterns in marbles are put in there? Is it the same principle? color stick, clear glass, pull, twist, and then make round?

take a piece of 1/2" round solid rod. pull off 2 pieces about an inch or 2 long, depending on how big you want to go. attach these to smaller solid rod "handles". flatten the 2 pieces of 1/2 rod by heating it in the flame then smashing it with a graphite paddle. melt lines of color down the center of one of these flattened pieces. heat and melt the second flattened piece onto the piece with the stripes. you should have a clear sandwich with stripes of color in the center. melt it all together and twist it. then make it round. ta da.
