There used to be a use for docking ears and tails, to prevent injury during hunts. Also, dogs with cropped ears can localize sound within a 5 degree cone, whereas dogs with uncropped ears can only localize sound within a 20 degree cone. If your dog is a search dog/guard dog/etc., it is still beneficial to have cropped ears for this specific reason. Most people just do it now because it 'looks cool', and because dogs like dobermans have long whip like tails that clear tables like a mother fucker... lol
Cropped ears are also less likely to get infected....
I agree with you on the dick chopping though. I'm 'eu natural' and my dick looks great. Plus the most sensitive part of my dick is still attached, so my orgasms will always feel better than someone who is uncircumcised. I think it's ridiculous that someone else makes that decision for you. It may not seem like much to people who don't have a foreskin, but how would you ever know what you're missing? Well, you seem to be omitting the Doberman Pincer and my dogs, Australian Shepherds. I am sure there are other examples in the working dog category. All the breeding in working dog, like all that giant ruff collar of Bloodhound, is strictly for a purpose, and was not easy. The ears and tails are breed into shapes across all breeds. For the workers, like Aussies, the tail is bred out, and any stubs are trimmed, for work in the brush. And as a companion dog, my side of it, it is good to have no big tails, in the house.

Then they became pets, and some people don't raise the ears.

How about we look at the facts rather than out dated and pseudoscientific notions...
Cropped ears are MORE LIKLEY to become infected. The flap on a dogs ear stops dirt and shit from getting in there when they dig, run and scruff.
Cropped ears DO NOT enhance or increase a dogs hearing - if it did ALL MWD/MPC (military working dogs/multi purpose canines) would have cropped ears.
Tail docking is something that is beneficial to sheep, not dogs.
And the majority of police dogs are either German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois or Labradors - all with tails and ears.
There is no scientific basis for cropping or docking - de-sexing is something else entirely. They are not comparative at all.

dobermans are guard dogs, not tracking or hunting dogs, and i cannot think of a single dog breed that hunts primarily by sound, even if we accept the preposterous suggestion that cutting off 3/4 of a dog's ears makes their hearing better, WHY would you do it?
you might as well fit a bloodhound with glasses, or equip a teacup poodle with titanium fangs and razor sharp retractable claws.
if lopping off 3/4 of an ear makes hearing better, why not chop 3/4 of each leg off racing greyhounds, then they would really be fast!

Many of these breeds would NEVER survive natural selection.
The King Charles Spaniel is prone to a condition where it's skull is too small for its brain.
It causes the animal to have seizures and we know from a similar condition in people that this is one of the most acutely painful conditions there is.
But breeders still breed dogs with the condition because they want spaniels with small skulls - it helps to increase the look of big eyes.
Plain cruelty.

docking tails and ears for working dogs is sometimes needful, but unless your dog really is hunting badgers, running cattle, or crawling into rat warrens, it's not needed, and thus should not occur.
i have never heard of docking tails to keep it out of farm machinery, thats kinda silly. you dont run a thresher or combine with your dog in the field.
cattle dogs with docked or extremely short tails suffer less risk of having their tails stepped on by clumsy beef critters, and thus prevents your cattle from getting bit by a pissed off dog, which HAS triggered stampedes before.
in that one case, docking makes sense. badger dogs and ratters likewise need their ears trimmed for safety.
every dog surgery that doesnt actually make a working dog's work easier and safer is cosmetic. and on a dog that will never actually work, it's just cruel and pointless vanity.

Some of those badger dogs need their tails so you can pull them out of the hole. Had a Scotty that needed it.
I wish my rat terriers tails weren't docked. I didn't have a choice seeing as how I adopted both of them, but they need them. They are relentless in pursuit.
I think the theory on the ears, is that clipping them makes the ears more parabolic therefore increasing the sound waves that reach the ear canal.

who said docking ratter tails was a good idea? certainly not me.
ratters need tails for extraction, they do NOT need big floppy ears for rats to bite and tug, or to get caught in the nest's materials.
