$50 ounces for upper tier legal weed?

I disagree with this analysis and common sense shows it to be somewhat of a ridiculous comparison. Take a look out your window. If you live in the woods somewhere, then disregard, but I live at the beach and the homes are stacked in like shoeboxes around here. I just took a glance out my window. I see anywhere in the neighborhood of roughly a couple hundred people dwelling in their homes. Im willing to wager that almost all of them eat tomatoes. Raw tomatoes. Pizza sauce. Salsa. Ketchup. Indeed, these individuals are grubbing down tomatoes like its 1999. And not just tomatoes. All sorts of other vegetables. For breakfast, lunch and dinner, and all those snacks in between. This consumption requires massive operations like the one you have attached as an image.
While looking down the same street, I imagine that maybe 20% of them actually smoke cannabis. Out of that number, maybe 15% are daily smokers. Out of that number maybe 5% are full fledged rabid stoners. This comparison is bogus because consumption habits are entirely different, and there are even sub categories within cannabis consumption.
Im not doubting that there will be a surge in massive greenhouses filled with Cannabis in the very near future. To say that this surplus will have an effect on the market to the point of an elevator drop in market prices(especially down to $50 a pound or whatever ridiculous claim the OP made) is a stretch to say the least. While I understand the ideology of supply and demand as it relates to economics, its much more complicated in regard to Cannabis. There are other variables within this world to consider that are unique compared with other markets. There already is a surplus. Prices have gone up! Theyll spike even higher with full fledged legalization due to taxation.
By the way, I welcome this discussion from an actual grower familiar with this trade. The OP of this thread simply isnt and wasnt qualified to even weigh in on this topic, much less spearhead a thread about it. Its the equivalent of me waltzing into a physics forum and debating that crowd on dark matter and string theory. And yet, here we are.:blsmoke:
Woah I went to bed and this shit blew up!

You're putting words in my mouth. No need to call anybody names, these discussions are great. No doubt this thread would get heated-it's a pot growers forum- no one wants to hear anything negative especially when it's about the future of their hobby/business. I posted a picture of a tomato greenhouse as an example of big grow operations and you started quoting numbers and percentages out of nowhere. I never said tomatoes and mj were the same, just that we'll see similar circumstances occur in the next 50 years as with the rest of agriculture in this nation. I don't at all think that $50 ounces will be had, but I do think that one doesn't want to be the farmer when big business bites. Look around at farmers today, not a pretty sight. They're owned by the govt basically and don't make shit- unless they battle hard to keep their product separate from the huge scumbags. Once this hits full legalization it will be a lot different than we all know it as now. It hopefully won't be like I think, but why wouldn't big business want a piece of the pie? Again- not saying that Green Giant canned veggies = organic farm fresh ones, but people will buy it.

It's of course fully speculation on both sides, but I would want to be part of those working on turning MJ into consumable pill form, because those guys are the ones who will feed the medical industry. Pharmaceutical applications will make people rich, not the small time farmer. The ones growing to sell it for smoke I think will have a tough time competing with the shithead WeedMart or whoever gets created, especially when medical results from tests come out about how pot smoking is bad for the lungs and all that shit, which is sure to happen.
I AM saying that if you live in the US and are somehow acting like huge corporate greed and mechanization of the industry won't happen then ill have to politely disagree.

Food: Kraft. Nestlé, Mars
Consumerism: Walmart
Banks: BofA, Chase, WellsFargo
Agriculture: Cargill
Ranching: Kargil
Beer: Anheiser Busch, Coors

Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing that we'll be able to get $2 ounces or something, but big business is salivating right now over this industry. History shows that in this country things start small and there may be 1000 farmers, but eventually they'll be 20 who have bought out all the others.

I think the OP has a point and it's worth discussing, not face fucking him over it. He's got balls for sure and of course he's going to get attacked because we're on a growers forum.

Peace ya'll.

Yeah man but this discussion was actually opened for legit legal growers who are producing legally and legit in those areas. I just honestly don't think anyone is here that like that or has the experience or education to understand trends. Years ago I did a lot of research on the subject, specifically the effects of legalization and the problems with prohibition of MJ for a final essay in college. Not ironically, much of what is transpiring I had the foresight to see.

Furthermore, I am still researching it from a business perspective and am seeing business people who are looking for investors to help get start ups going in Oregon. I am seeing business plans including manufacturing for under $200 a pound and bottom prices as low as $1000. I am also seeing outdoor growers in Washington just now maturing their operations. And these are very large scale, professional operations that I'll bet have their costs well under $200 a pound. Let's face it, you don't have to rebuy equipment, land and whatever else you need to get started every time you start a new crop.

I think obviously a green house with supplemental lighting is the cheapest way to go. I know it doesn't cost hardly anything to produce hempy bucket style. Use way let's nutes than hydro and you can use the mayerial over and over. And that's how business people in the legal areas will approach it. What are my costs, what can I sell it for and make a profit and can I get my costs even lower.

I think most of the thread detractors are just young people who maybe have a closet grow who think growing is a miracle. Which nature kinda is, but most anyone can learn to do it, it's really easy if you plan it right. Other detractors may be old school gorilla growers and yes the prices in the places where it's not legal will remain pretty high for a while because of the risk associated with it. But, even they should be researching these trends. I figure in the legal areas there may be a couple of more harvests in 2015 where the profits will great. But, I could see $500 a pound wholesale happening later in 2015. And I also agree with the original author that $50 an O is very possible some day for the end user.

Anyway thanks for your contribution. I did figure there might be more presence from legal business growers at the RIU, but mostly sounds like a bunch of kids and maybe some black market guys. Rah rah marijuana. At the end of the day it's just MJ. Been around for decades. Easy to propagate. Not that big a deal except the prohibition of it creates a lot of drama.

As for the pharmaceutical and health side of. You are spot on. Do a Google search on the Stanley Brothers Colorado Charlottes web. These guys have really done a lot of work on that end. And for children. I truly respect that! And I think after the prohibition is finally over in a few years it's going to be top shelf and inexpensive. And I believe the big biz types will still make great profit at $500 a pound.

Just my opinions though. Thanks again.
