5 mistakes most new growers make.

Well as a newbie myself I am greatful to good adviceand it can be pretty obvious things that trip you up to start off with. There was mention to add a note of mistakes so I shall do just that! Having my tent set up with 600w light and filtration all set up I thought I was ready to go, I put a few feminised seeds into the propogator and within a few days there was four little seedlings I have opted for a northern lights/white widow hybrid as on my previous post and amongst people I spoke with northernlights was strongly recommended as a good variety to start off with. I transferred my seedlings to small pots put them in the tent, set the timer to 18/6 and put the fan/extractor on and looked in on them after about 24 hrs resisting the temptation to keep looking at them or trying to kill them woth kindness...as there was no need as I had killed them with to much heat! Having not left the light on for an length of time I just wasn't aware of how hot it was going to be or that the 600w bulb was maybe going to be to much for my little seedlings, it was like an oven they were clearly"cooked" even the coco in little pots felt toasty warm so after doing a bit more research I got myself a 125w fluresant bulb ideal for seedlings I was advised, a fan to get air moving within the tent and a half decent hygrometer that not only tells the temperature it keeps a record of what it has peaked at and dropped to. So a few days ago a three more seeds found themselves in the propogator and and just been potted and seem to be thriving(fingers crossed)under the more gentle heat/light of the fluresant bulb which is the same fitting as the 600w so all I have had to do is remove the balast from the timed lighting circuit and it's set up in the reflector on yo yo hangers so my first problem has been overcome. I can see this is going to be a very learn by doing type of thing but thats ofton the best way to learn something new anyway!

What size area? Is your hid air cooled? Your temp prob may be in hand for now, but what is your solution for when you flower? You have to get that 600 under temp by then, maybe we can help

It is 1.2m square I have added a small fan to get the air moving inside the tent and the lamp is just air cooled yes, I would welcome any additional advice to be honest plus I have ensured therevis no central heating in that room also.

Square or cubed? How tall is it?

Hieght wise it's over two metres as I'm 6'2" and can stand in it no problem, the floor area is 1.2m square. I was at least considering a second of the small fans before switching back to the 600w bulb but I would be covering my bases for sure adding a fan and ducting to draw in cool air from outside of the tent..I'm a little unsure as it's all new to me so I appreciate you taking the time to offer advice.

Hook the in line fan to the light so it pulls the air from inside your tent across the light and exhausts out of the tent preferably outside or to a different room, add a couple occilating or stationary fans inside the tent to circulate air just to the tops of your canopy, then open your passive air intake vents to allow fresh air exchange, I work a tent about the same size and have 600w hps and a 300w led going now, I have another one if needed, but my temps hit highs of 86℉ only if my house gets up to 74(12℉ temp raise with lights on)

Edit: temps taken at conopy height, under canopy it's usually around 72℉

I take it you're referring to the extractor fan/filter set up its vented outside of tent via ducting, while I remember ill go tape those passive inlets open they keep fslling shut, I was planning another fan as just one for cooling just now...I am unsure what you mean hooking up the fan (extractor/filter I presume)to the light well not sure what id use to do it if honest is there a part I can get, bit puzzled (not a hard thing to do haha).

Sorry, I was assuming your hid was in an air cooled/cool tube housing, is it just an open faced bulb?

Yes it is an open reflector I know what you are referring to now I have seen them pictured, Ill try the second fan for now when I switch and if need be If it's to hot ill be able to order an intake fan and ducting next day Id like to think a second fan would do it as there was no air movement at all...bit of a rookie mistake...says the rookie! haha

A quick update, I decided to go with an external extractor fan set up with ducting to blow cool fresh air into the tent at the bottom and the existing filter/fan setup to extract warm air at the top, it's dual speed and really offers a much better range of cooling in addition to blowing in co2 and keeping the air circulating..wasn't overly expensive either, in fact it was pretty cheap I could have spent the same on a good quality fan to be honest.

Remember co2 works with a SEALED tent, if you are exchanging all the air in the tent you aren't going to get much benefit from it imo
