i do think 20/4 would work but the stress of going to 12 12 will be too much, you need to help the plants adjust to lower amounts of light. otherwise when they flower you will raise the roof with your tree's
I believed what you are saying up until recently when i read an article written by ed rosenthal, anything this guy says I take as fact.
He was basically saying that a plant doesnt sleep or rest. Light plus water and nutrient is what make the plant grow, take one away and the plant grows slower. The plant doesnt grow anywhere near as much foliage in the dark as it does during daytime. He said the only real benefit of 18/6 over 24/0 was that you could use this to time your plants to be ready. If you need the plants quickly 24/0. If you want to slow the growth down so that they will not be ready to flower early, then you use 18/6.

all i can say is 12/12 works.growers have been doing it for along time with great success.im not saying 20/4 doesnt work,im just saying theres a reason big growers use 12/12.

I'm not as knowledgable here as some, but I did deliberatley do an experiment on this subject being discussed.
My first two indoor HYDRO grows, I did 24/7 light and then automatically switched to 12/12 in one day. That worked very well.
My third grow, I tried going from 24/7 to 22/7, 20/7, 18/7 and gradualted two hours a day to 12/12. WHAT A WASTE OF A WEEK! I will never do that again, AND I swear it took twice as long for FLOWERING or SEX to be seen.
