i do think 20/4 would work but the stress of going to 12 12 will be too much, you need to help the plants adjust to lower amounts of light. otherwise when they flower you will raise the roof with your tree's

I believed what you are saying up until recently when i read an article written by ed rosenthal, anything this guy says I take as fact.

He was basically saying that a plant doesnt sleep or rest. Light plus water and nutrient is what make the plant grow, take one away and the plant grows slower. The plant doesnt grow anywhere near as much foliage in the dark as it does during daytime. He said the only real benefit of 18/6 over 24/0 was that you could use this to time your plants to be ready. If you need the plants quickly 24/0. If you want to slow the growth down so that they will not be ready to flower early, then you use 18/6.
First let me say thank you for not attacking me like I'm a moron as I already was by another member.

And I can very much appreciate trusting a source, I'd like to read this article because although I did trust the 18 hours, I often questioned if a plant really needs any dark periods during vegging. Basically saying a plant doesn't sleep and doesn't need to seems like it could be a valid point, I'd like to research that farther do you have a reference to this article?

I have to admit one thing I never agreed with is that the plant has to be thrown into a 12/12 and can't be weened gradually into it's 12/12...I mean after all it's not like the sun just one day goes on a 12/12 cycle. NO...the days get longer gradually until June 21st at wich point they gradually get shorter...and outdoor plants flower JUST FINE, so why would there be any reason an indoor plant would incure any stress from this.

I mean of course it probably induces flowering quicker, and that's why we grow indoors, for lower time great yeild. But as far as a gradual weening I can't imagine it stresses the plant in anyway, in fact I would think a sudden change would cause more "confusion" (or stress) in the plant than anything.

all i can say is 12/12 works.growers have been doing it for along time with great success.im not saying 20/4 doesnt work,im just saying theres a reason big growers use 12/12.

I think you have misunderstood what I have said, I'm not flowering on a 20/4...I vegged on a 20/4 versus a 18/6

I then put my plants into a 36hr dark period

Then switched the timers over to 12/12 for flowering.

I'm not at all arguing with 12 and 12, I just said it don't happen overnight in nature.

Well off topic I was always taught from large supply growers to use 24hrs light for veg then go direct 12/12 flower. On topic my plants always show sex in under 7 days but it may also depend on what light you are using.CFLs will take for ever.I have just completed a little experiment to confirm waht I knew.I had 6 plants 2 grown in sun light from seed 2 under 2 65 watt cfls equaling so they say total 600 watt and 2 under 4 foot florescent lights. At 3 weeks the results for veg came in the winner was the 4 foot florescent tubes both plants reached 12 inches and filled in fat, sunlight got plants about 6 inches and little thin cfls came in last with 2 inch plant with only 2 nodes so far.All grown in same soil from seed.So what lights you use I flower with no less then 1200 watts of hps lights

I failed to read that there were CFL's used...that may be why I am showing better results (7 days like yourself) I too used HID's through my whole grow other than the first two weeks from seed they were under (4) 4ft flo's

I'm not as knowledgable here as some, but I did deliberatley do an experiment on this subject being discussed.
My first two indoor HYDRO grows, I did 24/7 light and then automatically switched to 12/12 in one day. That worked very well.
My third grow, I tried going from 24/7 to 22/7, 20/7, 18/7 and gradualted two hours a day to 12/12. WHAT A WASTE OF A WEEK! I will never do that again, AND I swear it took twice as long for FLOWERING or SEX to be seen.

And like someone said, Plants do not grow in the dark, and plants do not rest or sleep. If you want more growth, and faster growth, then VEG 24/7 is my opinion and advise.

That's the result I would have expected from gradually going into a 12/12 cycle
