Here are some updated pics. To prevent flowering I have brought supplemental lighting to the garden in the form of 30 watt cfls. The container with the newly transplanted plant contains 2 full batches of super soil. the plant itself is purple diesel. The new container container is freshly amended with 20 lbs fish bone meal, 75 lbs chicken manure, 15 lbs gypsum, and 5lbs lime. this container will get my urkel dominant pheno of qrazy train in 20 days when the mix has cooled down.

the super soil pot is all new soil, with 2 batches in it. probably a little under 500 bucks. the second pot is used super soil. so the only new cost aside from the pot, was chicken manure bone meal, lime, and gypsum which cost under 100$

Sub'd for sure now, gonna be a great learning experience. Just curious why you went with those adjustments to the SS recipe. Specifically the chicken manure.

This recipe is from master grower/breeder TomHill. the questioned was posed to him at the beginning of a brilliant thread on icmag, The growing large trees thread. This is a simple recipe that is affordable with readily available ingredients. Chicken manure is better suited for outdoor because it releases more slowly than blood meal. The numbers of this mix are high in calcium for warding off mold and powdery mildew. also you get the right n-p-k-s ratio
This is going to be a good side by side comparison of an exotic expensive mix vs a re- amended simple recipe. My ultimate goal is to make my own compost from yard waste and horse manure, have a worm bin for castings brew my own teas and fermented plant extracts. Thereby eliminating almost all of the cost.

So I pulled a stoner move re-amending my soil yesterday. I didnt add nearly enough bone meal. The original recipe for a 300 gallon pot is 100# chicken manure 50# bone meal 20# gypsum. since my pot is a 300 gallon pot cut to 18" all ingredients are 75%, calling for 37.5# bone meal. For some reason I had it in my head to take 75% of 25. Thankfully I checked the recipe tonight and added the additional bone meal. When I went to turn the pile it was STEAMING and HOT to the touch. after 24 hours! Incredible!

Hey kushking I took your advice and I'm going with that soil mixture. I'm planning on having mostly photoperiod plants with like 6 auto plants. I'm not too sure on what size of container I will need for either, as I don't have room for a huge 225 gal pot and it has to be movable haha. Would a 20 gallon pot be big enough for plants that will be vegging all summer in nor cal? And I'm pretty sure the autos won't need too big of containers but I don't really know.. any suggestions? Also, how much did it cost you to make this soil mixture for one 225 gal container? Thanks man, I really appreciate it. +rep

last year i did 6 20 gallon pots with super soil: casey jones, green crack and cheese haze. i left them out to do there own thing in may, the green crack and cheese haze starting flowering early, and i had to toss em. i replaced them with 2 purple diesel from (1) gallon in early june. and 1 sw og (2 gal) and 1 jilly bean (7gal) in late june. the purple diesels produced a little more than a pound, sw 10 zips and the jilly was good for 3/4 of a p. casey jones which was more of a full season because it didnt flower early produced almost 2 1/2 pounds. i did top feed all of em in august. no doubt i would have had more if they weren't limited by the size of the container. recipe for 300 gallon pot is 100 # chicken manure 50 # bone meal 20 # gypsum. maybe half gypsum half lime if h20 source is good. you will need to do some math if less soil is needed. if you already have the soil the cost is less than $150.
auto-flower strains can go out early, everything else will need supplemental lighting. if you use 20 gal pots no need to go out before june they will be rootbound. i would consider bigger pots if possible. u can get 60 gallon smart pots, those will be movable.

I just went and bought 60 gallons worth of that soil mix today before I read this post. I plan on mixing it, watering it and letting it set for a few weeks like it said in the link you posted. Now reading that if I put photoperiod plants out they'll just get rootbound, I'm thinking I should just go all autos with the mix I have? With the situation I'm in, I'm not able to grow huge plants, my neighbors would freak out probably. Probably like a 5 foot tall plant max, so do you think I should put them out around june and just do autos until then? Would 5 gallon containers be big enough for autos do you think?

I have no experience with auto flowers. From what i understand they flower regardless of photoperiod. meaning you cant force flower them, so they have a mandatory veg time. what this amount of time is i dont know, but u should base your medium size bye the amount of time needed from start to finish. With normal flowering plants u can pull tarp (cover them for complete darkness daily) at any point during the season and force flower when plants have reached desired size.
Also another thing to consider is all of the aggressive pruning techniques at your disposal for keeping a plant below the fence line. all of the 20 gallon plants i described earlier were topped and kept @ about 5 feet.

The large containers are for full season. I just mixed some half strength mix for my 20 gallon containers that i will force flower. I used half of all ingredients so I can transplant tomorrow and avoid having to wait for it to cool down. I plan to feed with teas as needed. Still have to build a hoop house for these and order the black breathable fabric. Plan to pull tarp june 1st. These are the containers (20 gal):
