 I already have a 400 watt hps ballast bulb up in my reflector and I was wondering what I would have to do to move to more watts? would I have to get a new reflector and ballast as well? or could I just put a new bulb up in that socket? PLEASE HELP...also do you think that 400 watts are plenty for 2-3 plants anyways? just want to get my money/times worth as im sure you all do...any input would be useful, thank you.

You will need a new ballast, and bulb.. preferrably an hps..

Your reflector/hood should be fine.

400 watts will be ok for a couple of plants..

But, the thouie will do you and your plants complete justice.

If you dont have the intensity, you'll never get the density :)

The more watts the better..

Agreed, your ballast and bulb are designed to work together so they must be matched. As far as that socket, if it's a ceramic mogul (Close to an inch larger diameter than typical household (medium) style sockets), they are typically rated for 1500w 600v. So, you could definitely use the same physical socket. The rating should be right on the socket, possibly the bottom.
