For sea of green, even lighting is most important.
I would settle for nothing less than a strip based fixture.

i guarantee, any light from HLG will beat the crap out of a viperspectra...all day, every day.
you say they're getting yields using them, i say they would have gotten better yields, and higher quality with a better light.
you can get a harvest with CFLs, but i wouldn't recommend it.

It doesnt seem to be bad for veg but i am noticing more internode spacing under it.

I agree that vipar is cheap and i havent even thought about trying to flower with it

I will say i have grown straight fire with just t5s :)

1000 watts and the 2 x 600 are really good options but heat is a problem. If you use air cooled hoods and can push it out of the tent it is ok but you will have to add portable AC to keep it in the tent otherwise.

COBS or Quantum Boards work well too but I think get our feet wet with 2 x 600 with dim able ballasts so you can start them lower and build the intensity of light etc.

Or check out the CMH options because that sunplix 630 looks pretty damned sweet to me. 1 of those and a 315 would kick serious ass in a tent.

growing 20 x plants in a 1.5x1x5 indoor tent.

what lights would be best suited for coverage

1. 1x 1000 what HPS
2. 2 x 600 watt HPS
3. 1 x 800 watt california solar storm LED ( expensive unit at £1000 )
4. 2 x 600 watt viparspectre PAR full spectrum LEDs ( non expensive units . £150 each )

* what would you go with and why ?
* i want keep electric costs to minimum ( have heard that LEDs companies say they run cheaper but tests show that there is really not that much savings on running costs )

* i am in uk and im thinking to run the HPS x 600W in cold seasons ( im indoor apartment block ) and in our summer months i will use the LEDs obviously to keep heat / temps down.

what way would you go ? thanks in advance
If you do choose the hid route, just as far as my 4x4 is concerned, is my 600watt hps can be a little too bright for my tops if they ge too tall and sit around 12 inches away from my bulb in its xxtra cool tube.
I havnt run a 5x5 before, though i do think you would have a good time with 2 x 400watt hps, or even 2 x 600's. Itll give you a much better, more even canopy spread, and wont be too intense if they grow tall.

You are wanting to light up 25 square feet with less than twice the lighting but 2.7 times the space.

I tried looking at the grow you linked on the other thread but It wouldn't allow me to see anything without joining!

What exact lights is the guy using in what space and what is he yielding from that space?

I grow LED myself and do pretty well. Or I did, just moved house a couple of days ago. So no growing for me for a while. :cry:

I was suggesting two 600w HPS. Not crappy low yielding vipars. Almost bought one but so glad I stuck to HID. More PAR coverage per watt over viparspectra 600 means more energy efficient if you only value PPFD

I have a Viparspectra 900w reflector series, that i use for a glorified doorstop. I cant even give it away. I draws 480watts on full power, and even my 600watt hps dimmed to 400w, kicks the absolute shit out of it.
The PAR vs penetration value is just shithouse in my vipar. It advertises as being suitable to replace a 1000watt HID, and to cover a 5x5 in veg, and a 3.5x3.5 in flower. It struggles to even get a decent veg in a 3.5x3.5.
Maybe i got a defective one? Though i really do have my doubts, all its diodes turn on. It also runs VERY HOT, surprising hotter than my 600hps

I hear that. In a few more years we will see LED dominance I'm sure... But for now, grow like a pro with dimmable 600s imo :leaf:

Same here. This summer was shit indoors. I still used no a/c and the buds didnt fluff or stretch.

I think youll do a lot better than 1000w hps with 2 x 400w hps. You wont have enough room for the plants to grow into the light. You have to keep 1000w hps 3-4 feet above the canopy, and if you have a 7ft tall tent like i do it doesnt leave you much room at all, one once you consider your pots/hydro setup. Then add the plant hight ontop of that.
As far as PAR goes aswell itll be a MUCH higher value in the centre with a 1000watter. With 2 x 400's, not only will you save 20% electricity, you will probably get a better yield, because the light has room to spread. This means you will be able to have a more consistant canopy and head room, allowing larger, taller plants in the same space.
I think lighting is all about its efficiency, watts out of the wall still cost the same led or hps.
