growing 20 x plants in a 1.5x1x5 indoor tent.

what lights would be best suited for coverage

1. 1x 1000 what HPS
2. 2 x 600 watt HPS
3. 1 x 800 watt california solar storm LED ( expensive unit at £1000 )
4. 2 x 600 watt viparspectre PAR full spectrum LEDs ( non expensive units . £150 each )

* what would you go with and why ?
* i want keep electric costs to minimum ( have heard that LEDs companies say they run cheaper but tests show that there is really not that much savings on running costs )

* i am in uk and im thinking to run the HPS x 600W in cold seasons ( im indoor apartment block ) and in our summer months i will use the LEDs obviously to keep heat / temps down.

what way would you go ? thanks in advance

If your new to it all then nawt wrong with going 1000w hps.
If you want LED for sure and can afford HLG600 from growers lights. Now available in EU although I don't remember the site, but links are on the horticultural lighting group site.

The saving in energy costs is right there. That HLG will produce the same light as 1000w single ended HPS, but its a 600w light. Less power equals less heat.

Neither of these situations will negate the need for proper air exchange though.

If you like that vid watch this..

In fact watch all of his vids. :bigjoint:

this^, plus what you said. start off with the hid lights, use them when the weather is cold, go with leds when the weather is a lot warmer. but don't buy those pre made pieces of crap, go to the led forums here and look around, i know digi-lux and other companies ship to europe, get some advice and make your own for a fraction of the price, and you'll get a 100 times better light.

i'd need some more information...there are cobs and then there are COBS....there's a big difference in cheap and inexpensive
all a cob is, is a bunch of leds packed together directly on a pcb board by the maker. if they use crappy leds....

i know that's not identical with your unit, but close enough. the "1800 watt" unit actually draws 320 watts from the wall...not each cob, the whole unit....they're claiming it's the equivalent of 3 600 watt hps lights....which i can tell you ain't so.
the 600 actually draws 100 watts from the wall.....

you need to go to the same forums i mentioned above and read up before you buy any more lights.

See this is why I am so confused, iv had a look at other forums, from what I can gather & have been told is that the 3 LEDs I have should be equivalent to a 600 watt HPS. the 2 CFL’s are for the vege stage. What other lights should I get to go with these?

spec it for the amount of cobs u can run off a driver for example 4 citizen clu048 gen 6 off a 180 meanwell driver and build bars from l shape aluminium

I don’t understand what u mean by 320w from the wall & not from each COB.
He means the total power for each light unit. As in one whole light is 320w.
Where as they are advertised as 6x 300w cobs per fixture. Adding up to 1800w. But you don't power a cob that hard, you power them soft to prolong life and increase efficiency.

Whats relevant here is you have a few grow lights which are 320w each. So how well you do with them will be determined by how much of an area you are lighting up.

I don't know the efficiency of epistar diodes, I know they are not great but they will still do the job.

For what its worth they seem bloody expensive for what they are.

COBs became very popular a couple of years ago, now amazon, ebay ect are full of lights with the word COB all over them, it sells.
But not all COBs are equal, they range in efficiency, its the efficiency that counts when wanting to create the same light for less watts. That's why COBs became popular, because of Cree COBs and then later other COBs such as citizen or bridgelux.

So what space are you wanting to use these lights on?

My vote is for 2 600s

Then upgrade to led for summer growing :)

So far my cheap vipar 300w at the wall light is doing ok for a 3x3 veg room :)

Havent tried it yet for flower as i just wanted a light that would fit my odd size veg room.

But im currently rocking a gavita with plans for an led summer set up :)

Good luck

I will add my first led ligh was like from the original led ufos 90w of BLURPLE

They did not impress me but i noticed what ever plant was under it was frostier then ones not under it?

So i normally just beam it down over my canopy
To help add some more frost .

I dont know if its worth it or not as i havent scientifically tested it :)

if your running a 300 w led in a 3x3 then 2x600s is plenty for my 5x5 surely

you've got the lights, try a run with them and see. they'll flower a plant, but you won't get the yield, or the quality you would from a better light.

bazzo on 420 forum is f=growing with LEDs 2x600 and he is getting the yield , ive watched countless videos and diaries where all led grows are getting the yield.
can you provide me with more info please. i may go buy 2x 600 HPS and keep the LEDs for summer
