While changing the water today I noticed there was a brown slime on the water pipe and a fine sand consistency powder on the bottom of the reservoir. The part that makes it a bit weird is that the slime doesn't appear to be on the roots and the smell is earthy and nice. Info about the setup...

In nft you use spreader mat without a problem so you should be ok. If you're worried use polystrine as its not porous and floats on top. stocky

buy some cheap sponges from a super market then pad the bottom with them, this way the water should drip onto them instead. Stocky
