That's not too close for a 1kw HID. It could be with the increase in light intensity, the plant demands more nutrients. Are you burning them in? They need to be acclimated to the higher intensity light. A picture would help.

You can run 1kw at 18" w/o a cool tube. Do it all the time. Gotta stay on top of it, though, as new growth can complicate things. Agree that it's an overwater issue with too many nuets.

I've never had mine tested, but I'm 90% sure it's manganese. Different minerals leave different colored stains (both in the toilet, and in the water holding tank). You can get an idea by pictures on the net.
