To explain why you have the pH swings is the nutes have ph buffers and without the nutes there is no way to keep it.

Ph affects nutrient uptake via the roots, in a cloner with just water there is no need to adjust pH, ever.

Having a larger res makes keeping ppm and pH stable much easier. It is also easier to control temps.

Do not use the rubbermaid tubs. They are very flimsy, allow light penetration, and can never be filled leaving a small res. At least use the black with yellow top 27gal tuff boxes from Lowes,HD, or Walmart. If you want a much better res the smartbin at wWalmart is 50gal runs $46 and is heavy duty.

I use the aluminum bubble wrap from Lowes and either tape or velcro or zip ties to keep it tight.

I have never and never will keep mothers. There is no need. I have had up to 17 different strains and a few of those had different phenos and never a mother.
