Get a good soil structure established with some organic no till, and your roots will max out their capabilities in the pots you have them in :)

Diatomaceous Earth (FOOD GRADE) destroys them and won't hurt your microbiology even a little. (It's even used as a soil conditioner by some for it's water retention and micro nutrient levels) Make sure to let the top of your medium dry out between watering and just mix the D.E. into the top 1/4"...
