If your having that much problem with heat you may have to invest in a a/c unit, unless you change your light to cfls or something the heat problem in not going to go away. Or you can get a cool tube for your ballast and that should help as well.

Reefcouple is right you wont usually get more from topping, but you may depending on the strain. So strains liked to be topped and others do not.

Why on earth do you throw away your mother when your done???? Thats crazy have you any Idea the amount of bud you would get off a mother that was vegged for a year before flowering, but I do agree you should always take a few clone from a mother before you flower it so you can keep the strain alive.

I would would go with the MH over leds and HPS over MH if you only going to get one. If heat is an issue for you make sure you get a reflector that you can hook up a exhaust fan to or just get a cool tube for the lamb.
