Sounds like gnats to me too. If you want to stay organic, some people use a layer of sand on the top of the compost. Others swear by powdered cinnamon. It's a natural fungicide, so the gnats starve.

Looks OK to me. Myself, I don't mist the plants, although I sometimes do mist the inside of the humidity dome itself. Good luck. Edit: make sure to keep the growing medium warm.
