im no botanist but i heard that when you cut down a plant, the plant will shed some of its roots to stay proportionate to the size of the canopy. but it doesnt hurt to try and i am interested in what would happen. i get your logic though.
use perlite to cover your soil. theres neem oil and gognats that you can soil drench, sticky fly traps work good and you can cover your soil with a cube cap or makeshift device to stop light from hitting your soil

you can also take a plastic bag make it light proof and place it over a part of the plant so that part only gets 12 hours, but you have to do it manually
a friend gave me a plant that was on at night and i switched it to day as my lights are set to, and i didnt notice anything. and its halfway through bloom when he gave it to me. im still pretty new at this but hopefully that helps.
