Not sure where you live... how cold does it get in the winter? The 1000W will provide some heat but not when the lights go out...you don't want severe fluctuations in temps so you need some climate control...

Can't run a light without the ballast. Even 23-watt fluorescent bulbs have a ballast built-in. And as Robert said, you have A LOT of reading and research to do.

The ballast helps power the light bulb. The "metal shade thing" is a reflector above the bulb to reflect the light down and out. There are tons of styles and prices out there. Just Google 400W HPS and you'll see a huge selection. Check Craig's List... often people want to sell their grow...

I've only done indoor... unless you live in the country, seems outdoor growing would attract the popo, neighbors, friends, etc., like flies on shit. The pic is Blueberry grown indoors in coco this year.
