If I'm not so aged as to have forgotten, I think TORQUE varies when voltage is varied using a variac to feed PSC motor load. THUSLY motor speed only varies under a load, but it's still reduced wattage.... food for thought

Why do you ask for advice? Clearly you should be teaching us more experienced electricians / growers. :)
The non variac speed controllers fuck up the waveform thus often causing motor groan at reduced speeds. Any speed controller that requires a large heatsink should be avoided in the first place.
The cheapest options aren't the best.
Of all the old cars I drove, the 78 Pontiac firebird trans am I had with a 455 / turbo 400 really outdrove an 86 iroc z 5.7l. Handling was actually better with the herb adams rts on the TA.
