can I grow with just HPS

I've had a perpetual grow for years and use only HPS bulbs. I veg with a 400W set-up and flower with a 1000W unit. They MH bulbs burn quite a bit hotter than the HPS and that is a consideration especially this time of year, especially in the flowering room. I get good results without any MH...

    Watering Amount

Pot size is important when determining a watering schedule. When I am using 3-gallon pots to finish flowering I water daily with 2 cups of water with liquid nutes included. When we get hot streaks like right now I'll increase the watering to 3 cups daily. Good luck, BigSteve.

    Plant height, how... ?

If you want shorter plants use pots like those in the big picture from Underground Scientist. You want pots that are at least as wide as they are tall. That will encourage shorter bushier plants. Good luck, BigSteve.

    Seed Leaves removal?

I think he means seed caps. I use 2 toothpicks and remove both seed caps before the seedling goes into dirt. Good luck, BigSteve.

    Help With FIM

I'm not sure you cut off enough but it looks like you are pretty close. One important factor you got right is to have an even cut. It is too easy to cut at an angle and end up with a lopsided main cola. If you aren't pleased wait about a week and FIM her again. If I was you I'd let her go. Good...

    looking for some help

My general rule is to not remove any leaves until they are more than 50% yellow/dead. Years ago I had 4 Armageddon autos going and I kept on removing one or two big fans a day. To help get more light to the rest of the plant. All at once I developed an albino condition where all the new...

    Cloning a clone

Not very practical. Clone donor moms should be 6 weeks old before they give up cuttings to be clones. By the time the second generation clone is 6 weeks old the original mom has been vegging at least 12 weeks. Most all strains will start to self-flower before 12 weeks vegging. Better to set up a...

    More vertical growth?

To work around a FIM job you would need to top her on the main cola right below where the FIM-inspired branches grow out of the main cola. FIMming really is a hit-or-miss operation until you've been doing it a while. Different strains FIM different too in case you needed another frustration...

Using Pot Shape To Shape Plant

I've been doing a lot of experimenting with one general goal -- I want my perpetual grow to consist of short bushy (indica) plants. After a while I noticed that the shape of the pot used can influence the shape and often size of the plant. I bought some 18-inch tall trash baskets at the Dollar...

    Seedling Growing Very Slowly

A 3.5 gallon pot is a finishing pot, not for new seedlings. When new seedlings first go into dirt they spend almost all their energy growing a root ball that will support the plant. Only after the roots grow to reach the inside of the pot do they revert to spending energy on growing greenery. In...

Help??? Root bound plant with about 2 weeks left to flower!

A 5-gallon pot should be able to support a plant for 20 weeks of growth at 4 weeks/gallon. Unless the roots have changed from white to an ugly green or black/brown I wouldn't worry about being root-bound. A healthy plant should fill the pot with roots. That's natural. Good luck, BigSteve.

Looking for a nice dense indoor strain

Slightly off topic but still relevant.... Find pots that are at least as wide as they are tall. I've found that short wide pots will produce plants that are shorter, bushier and have shorter "intermodal distances". "I D" = the distance from one node or set of branches, to the next. The shorter...

    Q on Cloning

There are a number of variables that help determine the number of days to clones rooting. Pellets vs. cubes, heat mat or no, humidity, etc. I use 2-inch jiffy pellets in a clear dome and mat with 100% RH for my indica clones. I first see roots anywhere from Day 9 to Day 14 with my set-up. Good...

    When to flower?

From the third picture it looks like that plant has started to flower. If not it is real close and I would go ahead and turn the timer to 12/12. Good luck, BigSteve.

First timer needs help with flowering please

From the picture it looks like your plant is mostly sativa. Combined with your relatively short veg period it is not surprising that you haven't started to flower at 3 or 3 1/2 weeks at 12/12. I defer to Vostok as he seems to have this variety down cold. I agree that all you need is a bit of...

Is anyone else having trouble germinating new seeds ?

I tweak a few things when the weather starts to warm up. I use the paper towel method and usually have 3 layers of PT above and 3 layers below the seeds. As it gets warmer I have better luck by only using one layer of PT on top of the seeds. Another advantage to this adjustment is that it...

Growing a bush instead of a tower!

"I raised my light a few more inches thinking she will reach for the light. Thoughts?" I was going to suggest using the hand test to get your lady the extra light she needs. Pot plants tend to be about as heat sensitive as human hands. MJ guru Jorge Cervantes tells you to slide your hand to...

Need advice on my flower room

FYI -- I only veg my girls about 5 weeks so they are usually 20-24 inches when they go to flower. I mention the size as I've found I need 4 square feet of floor space to flower for each square foot of vegging space. Good luck, BigSteve.

    questions on topping

I agree with Dr. Nick on this one. As my younger seedlings are in solo cups I don't look to do any topping or FIM'ing until the plant has grown wider than the top of the cup. That's not a rule or anything - just a mental gauge I use. Good luck, BigSteve.

Seedling help Needed - with pictures!

It might be a good idea to make up a couple of braces ahead of time in case you need them. The braces are to keep new seedlings from tipping over. I buy 12-inch wooden skewers at WalMart and wrap a pipecleaner around the skewer. Danger time for tipovers is when you water. So have your braces...
