Sanjay Gupta changes stance on medical marijuana

I am happy to see him see the light, but I have to wonder why it took so long. He is an intelligent guy and the evidence is out there for all to see. Only the committed drug warriors ignore the evidence and they do it for their own nefarious reasons, not because they are too dumb to see the evidence.

A theory I heard is that because he was working for CNN he couldn't say anything positive about it without risking his job, now that it's becoming more mainstream, they're more lenient with what he can say about it.

That makes more sense to me than he was just ignorant of the facts, as you said, he's not an idiot..

You are probably right. After all, look at all the retired law enforcement types that join LEAP. Look at all the retired politicians who condemn the drug war.

That really irks me, these people in powerful positions who could actually do something instead cower behind the fear of losing it, then when they can't do anything real anymore, they come out and support it..

It's like they're having their cake and eating it too, they get the best of both worlds.

Deep down, part of me wants to still say fuck that guy

The Nuremberg excuse "just doing my job" is weak. I've had that conversation with many, even the guy that started LEAP.

People always have the option of doing the right thing. I applaud him for finding the courage to admit he was wrong but I'm not gonna invite him to my birthday party or anything.

Dr. Gupta says:

We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that.

I find his apology to be somewhat refreshing.

We have been lied to by the DEA for decades. I know, I am shocked to find this out.

Look at what he discovered about the funding of specific types of research on cannabis:
In my quick running of the numbers, I calculated about 6% of the current U.S. marijuana studies investigate the benefits of medical marijuana. The rest are designed to investigate harm. That imbalance paints a highly distorted picture

Without Government interference, all of those with eyes would be able to see clearly that the Emperor is buck naked.:bigjoint:

Actually, if you look at it sideways that funding seems reasonable and balanced.

It is really easy to find the benefits of marijuana if you look for them. It is incredibly hard to find the downsides to it...

Yes.
And therein lies the rub.
Gupta is an MD who was misguided by this lopsided "research". He is not the only one.
Shameful in my estimation.

I agree. The one drug that is almost impossible to OD on and has proven to have useful applications in many medical situations is schedule 1 while Alcohol is legal along with a thousand other drugs you can accidentally OD on.

Fucked up world we live in...

I believe it, ANY major news corporation had to vet their correspondents and affiliates, and with that much sway even an intellectual like Sanjay isn't going to speak his mind if itll cost him his position, no matter how closely held a conviction.

Only harm from Marijuana is that it contains some cancer causing agents.

But so does the diesel fumes from the highway

Well I am not sure about that, it has created some bent fucking hippies that haven't helped our cause very much. Cannabis just isn't for everyone but the same thing can be said for all medication. If you want Americans to turn on you start spouting off communist socialist rhetoric, the shit goes down hill fast. Another thing pro cannabis figures are not selling enough the anti dealer aspect of legalization. Shady dealers and hippies hurt our image the most.

We really need a campaign of commercials with doctors, lawyers, business owners, CEO, etc stepping up and saying "we use cannabis responsibly, we pay taxes, we help our community, we save lives, Why are we criminals?"

Hi my name is UncleBuck, I am a stay at home drug dealer than operates in the black market in a legal state. I am pro communist and I sit around playing on the internet all night, every night trolling and spamming communist rhetoric. I am bigoted towards southerners and Christians. I am also a pedo that masturbates to minors pictures and send it to them through email. I lie about my skin color so that people will take my false racist exaggerated strawman propaganda to heart. I do not pay taxes since I work illegally (well not really work, that would cut into my RIU time) .

A shining example you make Bucky for the anti cannabis crowd.

lol, when you have to make up stuff like you do, you have no case.
Which part of that was made up?

You consider what other people do for a hobby a job, you spend 18 hours a day trolling on RIU, and you are an apologist for the Obama administration and the DEA...

A shining example of what liberals can do given free reign...
