Calling all chemists and botanists! Let's put an end to overpriced nutes!

Appreciate the replies, looks like there are more fans of Jack's than I thought, maybe I'm just the most recent surprised customer for their system. I found epsom salts at wally world for less than 2 bucks and add 1/8 tsp to each 20 gallons every nute change, about every 2 weeks. Someone posted that he was not changing nutes with Jack's he simply added full strength solution whenever the tanks needed it. I do that with a DWC unit, using 1 tsp per gallon jug, but do a complete solution swap every 6 weeks. Yes, I realized that my crank was being yanked, but still want to try to find a way to duplicate the stuff from the stores. Old habits die hard. My results with the Jack's was pretty damned impressive, not sure why I am still looking for a formula for Sweet. I do have some molasses ready to go, but the posts about gumming up systems has me waiting until I figure out a way to get the good stuff to the plants without mucking things up. I am thinking that boiling a couple TBSP per gallon might do the trick to make it into a stable solution, but that's just uninformed speculation. Suppose I could try boiling some water and see what turns out, sounds like a plan for Monday morning when I won't get quizzed about what the heck...

As far as a license to purchase, for a small time grower the Jack's is easily available online, my order was about $120 shipped for a supply that will go years, maybe decades, for 2 - 25 lb bags and a bucket of Blossom Booster. Here's a link to the company that makes it. There are some fertilizer bases that can be used by terrorists, but a weed farmer really wouldn't need that stuff when the already mixed stuff is available for cheap. There is a long list of things that plants need, and a bunch of scientists figured it out and mixed up already, so might as well use that. There are other products out there, but this is the only one I have tried since venturing out of the 'safe' growing method with grow shop nutes. I am enjoying the results.:peace::weed:

I had to look up Earth Juice, sells for less than $40 a gallon, so still pretty expensive compared to Jack's. Looks like good natural ingredients including guano, and they make a soluble powder for hydro. I love the idea of an all natural grow, but with hydro, it's hard to not feel like a mad scientist in the lab when working with the equipment, especially when you get some huge buds looking back at you. So I'll use whatever works, is cheap and makes healthy plants. :peace::mrgreen:

Whatever works. As long as you are happy with your results, use whatever!

So just have to make one more plug for the JR Peters folks. I ordered 1lb of thier hydro duo on 7/26. I received my order on 8/2 about 8 days later. On Friday afternoon I was reading through the directions and had a few questions, so i shot them an email. 2 hours later i had my answer, but then Saturday I got my shipment and the stuff came in bags inside plastic tubs, but the tubs got opened in shipping so i didn't know which was which. I fired off another quick email and this morning at 8am sharp i had the answer in my inbox. If the product is as good as their employees, i think i'm going to be a happy DB.

I have heard that it is easy to burn your plants with too much Jack's, but that was not my experience in hydro. I posted the amounts I use of the 3 items and results were excellent. For veg I will use equal amounts of the Jack's Classic and the Cal Nit. Curious to see how it works with soil, not that I would ever bring dirt into my grow room. Not yet anyway...:bigjoint:

I have an M.S. in chemistry. But it doesn't matter on forums like this...
True, there is always some 16 year old asshole whose goal is to troll and run off every knowledgeable person on here. Just don't let them get to you. ...and WELCOME!!

So, what would it take to reverse engineer some of these products? I still have not seen anyone offer a way to home brew a replacement for Botanicare Sweet or any of the bud candy type products. So far all we have is a probable conclusion that they are not really needed.

Is that it? A waste of time and money to buy them or use them? If that is the case someone needs to let Uncle Ben know that he was right all along...:peace::bigjoint:

I dont know dude, some folks really absolutely swear by Sweet. Not only that, but they swear by the fact that it gives the buds a very specific smell and flavor all the way through. I cannot say for sure. I am growing Double gum right now so its SUPPOSED to smell and taste this way, and ive not done a grow of it without the sweet. For me, sweet is Magnesium Sulfate that blends a hell of a lot better then Epsom salts in room temperature water.

I will say this, in the new soil mix i am using the double gums are a lot sweeter smelling, but there are two variables. 1 i switched from using happy frog to a lobster compost, and two i started using sweet from the beginning.

Uncle Ben already knows he's right. If Chuck Norris grew weed he would send Christmas cards to Uncle Ben.
When it comes to weed he beats chuck Norris? I don't know man, I've met chuck Norris, shook his hand and everything. He would have to be some kind of astronaut farmer

Chuck Norris doesn't grow weed but if he did it would be epic; just look at what he did with the little spruce trees they now call "Redwoods".

Perhaps in time a solution will become apparent.

That stuff from Hydroponic Research is EXPENSIVE! Compare to Jack's, another powder formula with everything, for 95% less cost. Seriously folks, has the tide gone THAT far out?

Chuck doesn't have to grow weed, he just takes it.

The untrained eye will not see the difference between an organic grass-fed NY strip next to a common grocery store NY Strip. Hell, they might not even be able to taste the difference, though both should be obvious

I can tell you Jack's contains heavy metals and other toxic crap I don't want to be smoking!

Expensive? 1 TBS/2.5g = ~ 400ppm (awesome for veg); 2 TBS = ~ 800ppm, awesome for flower

Here is the MSDS sheet for Jack's Classic. It doesn't have heavy metals.
