Calling all chemists and botanists! Let's put an end to overpriced nutes!

There are quite a few folks here who have extensive knowledge about how cannabis plants work. Today I saw a bottle of Sweet on the shelf with a $64 tag. The prices of things like Tiger Bloom and Hydroplex are equally insane. With the resources available on this site it should be possible to gather enough information about the actual contents of these bottles and produce a list of home brew formulas, recipes, to re-create similar products at home. I am about to boil some water and add a couple TBSP of molasses to substitute for Sweet. I feel like a caveman barbarian.

I recently completed a hydro grow with Jack's and had great results. The cost difference between Jack's and the Botanicare (and the others) is huge. Feeling good about my success with Jack's leads me to the next step, figuring out how to enhance bud size without buying 'bloom boosters'.

If you have been on this site for a while you know that there are a lot of self-proclaimed "experts". I challenge the experts to step up and help move the state of the art of cannabis growing forward by sharing knowledge. Reducing the cost of growing helps to get cannabis into the hands of people who want/need it and seems a noble objective.

I've very excited to see this thread and I hope some of the qualified guys (and girls) chime in. I applaud you for not buying into the snake oil and rocket fuel (thanks Uncle Ben) hype promoted by many unscrupulous manufacturers. I'm not a chemist and I don't play one on TV but I did pull a 4.0 in college chemistry and I know quite a bit about botany but due to my circumstances I'm not able to help much. I believe there is some very good information that should be fairly easy to dig out (a lot easier than say "staining techniques to differentiate between T and B lymphocytes"). I know the ingredients are cheap and the quantities are very discrete. The profits are obscene and I would love to see this thread be a great success.

I have an M.S. in chemistry. But it doesn't matter on forums like this... too much noise and not enough maturity, education and discipline. Just trying to explain the incredibly simple mass balance that a x2 dilution of a 10-10-10 is the exact same as feeding a conc of 5-5-5, goes over too many heads.

Best to talk about beanbank deals and smoke reports...

Sorry, but true.

Blame the person who derided me for being stupid when I suggested a method for making Rick Simpson Oil. He claims to be chemist by education, but I am skeptical, given the arrogance and rude online conduct. If a person has put the time into the study of either plants or chemistry, then I would expect a certain level of civility. There is a mix of rude and civil dialog here, thanks to this being an open forum that lets anyone participate. My hope is that there are some legit folks who can help. The ultimate post would be from a current or former employee of a nute manufacturer, who could post up the actual ingredients...

Hey, a guy can dream.:peace:

BTW, I don't know if the molasses and boiling water will work, just flying by the seat of my pants without the benefit of a formal education.

Not to be rude, but you think because someone is educated, they would know how to be civil? That is pretty naive, most of the people I know and work with that are above average intelligence and learned have "unique" social skills to say the least. There is of course a (very small) percentage that are graced with both, and sadly a not quite as small percentage graced with neither :)

I'm hoping that a certain moderator will jump in here. He's not only the smartest, most educated person here but also one of the nicest and funniest.

Anyone with the skill to make such products will either make them for themselves, or will be a businessman and will exploit that ability. You are attempting to combine the two. Why would anyone wish to release a product as charity? Anyone prepared to do that would be better investing such efforts into changing the social order that caused it to be necessary.

I just cut some White Widow after 10 weeks flowering with Jack's. It flushed for about 6 days and trichs were 80-90% cloudy. The stems were a little soft, I think that adding a little Silica Blast would have resolved that issue, I just used a couple wire ties to support the buds at the end. They were grown under a 600W cool tube HPS (cheap iPower ballast and bulb).7-22-2013 WW 10 weeks.jpg7-22-2013 WW 10 weeks1.jpg7-9-2013 WW 8 weeks.jpg Just finished trimming so it will be a few weeks before cured and ready. I will continue to use Jack's, but need to find alternatives to the overpriced additives like Sweet. This WW did have Sweet and Aquashield added during flower. Asking for information here is like asking on a playground, going to have some silly replies and a lot of unhelpful crap, but perhaps there is someone who can actually contribute.:peace::bigjoint:

The problems I had with RSO research was finding details about decarboxolating the THC during oil extraction using Everclear. The alcohol doesn't get hot enough because it boils at about 170 F and the decarb takes place at around 240. I did make the oil and just heated it to about 180 during the final heating and it seems to have come out fine. I'll try the next run with decarb'ed buds at the start, planning to bake 'em in a pyrex dish wrapped in foil at 245 F for 20 minutes. The problem with the info on this site was the personal attack style of posts that resulted from my initial request for help. Tough sometimes to filter out the garbage from the gold. :peace:RSO 6-17-2013 RSO.jpg

IMHO if you want the best at the best price then true organics are the way to go, I am not saying so-called organics you buy in the store. I am a cheap bastard when it comes to my grows, gardening and such but here I am lucky I have lots of space unlike many here that are in apartments. If you live in a house and have a yard even a small one you can be organic easily. I make my own compost, kitchen scraps no meat or dairy products, lots of grass clippings, leaves combination of green and brown. I use native soil add my compost with wood ash and manures, horse and cow being my favorite soley because they are the easiest for me to obtain, rabbit is wonderful. My soil tends to carry a plant through its entire cycle without adding anything else on most strains that I am growing. Many strains I have grown did require more teas to get through their cycle but that is where the manures come in for teas. I have bought and do use commercial products, so called organic types but their use is limited and mostly used now only on side by side comparisons of my grows. It takes time, finding what you need and learning what mix works best but the end product for me is worth the extra work. There is lots of material on the internet for good composting practices, I realize that many folks don't have the time or the space to be truly organic but depending on your number of plants 5 or less you don't need much over a 4x4 space to make your compost. If I can be of further help please feel free to PM me I am happy to help.

I believe there is some very good information that should be fairly easy to dig out

Trolls are very unwelcome in this thread, and trolling a moderator in his forum is just plain stupid. If you have something to CONTRIBUTE, then show it. How old are you?

I use a hydro/aero/NFT system so composting isn't for me. I simply want to know how to make nutes like the stores are selling, starting with Sweet from Botanicare. I believe that it is sugar, maybe fructose and sucrose, and water. I suppose I should try a grow without adding anything other than the basic Jack's and see how it comes out.

But if anyone knows how to make Sweet at home, please post it up!

And please explain why a picture of Jimi has Bob's name at the bottom. I can dig that there are others who are fans of both musicians, but it just seems a bit twisted up, like chewing aluminum foil.:peace:

Well, if your going to do this, you'll need a paypal or something to fund it. You can talk all day, but with no financial contributions, nothing will happen.
