question about a window unit AC

There is a youtube video where a guy builds "cage" on the back of a window unit and then uses some step downs to duct it out.. i cant remember if he had any fans inline with it but i would if i was you.. just incase you really needed the 50$ cl special ac option.

I have a perfect place to exhaust the hot air...there's an attic door that pulls down in the garage ceiling...that'll be the escape....I saw a portable at Sam's for $229.00 I think it was...I may as well invest in the portable cause this will be an issue every summer....thanks everyone for the help.....n what's up Bigger420
need to take that door off replace it w plywood that has the right size hole............opening the door and sticking the hose in wont work very well

I bet its a pulldown stairway.......Id just cut a hole thru the plywood.
Leave the duct with some slack on the floor, incase you need access to the attic.

No, unfortunately mine is mounted in a Window, just trying to give you a feel for what size you may need. I would look into a roll around ac unit, do you have sufficient ventilation in your area?

Leaving the door open does help with cooling the attic,Thus lowering the A/C consumption for the house.
Hot air is gonna rise.

/\ just what I was thinking!

I leave my basement door open all night with the AC on full blast in my living room so that the cooler air drops down into the basement as much as possible.

go open the door to your attic and see what happens......
I actually agree with woody on this one, I also own a hvac company, regardless of that, if your attic is cooking on a summer day, plus your pumping hot air from the a/c unit into it, the hot air is going to come right into the house and make the house a/c work harder to remove that heat because the return is pulling in all the air from the whole house, including the attic.

if you have an un insulated attic and try to cool your house, it won't get as cold as if the attic was insulated.

The first thing one must look at concerning AC is the power requirement. I had one of those portables and it drew quite a bit of power. Considering your space requirement you might price one the cheapies for under $200 in most stores. Just the smallest one would do. Yes, you would have to construct an opening for it but you would end up with a lower power bill. Look into a Craftsman reciprocating saw. Spot your hole towards the top in one corner. Make sure the back is in an unnoticed spot and will drain backside into some rocks. My cousin didn't want to put a hole in the wall so he just cut a hole in the door and locked the door.:peace:

Its in the garage,so its not a conditioned space. Its a pulldown staircase to acess the heater.Im sure he does not have a supply or a return in the garage!

good point, even still, if the stairs are left open, that heat is coming into the garage unless he has gable ends with fans to remove it.

Finally someone knows....Chuck he could have the gable ends or the whirly birds is what i callem and when he opens the pulldown its gonna suck air from the garage. Here in TX we have to have the Attic vented with both the gable ends and Whirly birds.
Basically by leaving the pulldown open were making another opening to help keep the attic cooler,The gables and vents that are on the roof create a suction pulling the garage air up and out.Chuck ive never seen a attic that didnt have gable ends or whirly birds to
help control the heat of a attic. But like I said im in TX.

And Woody I could care less what you think,I know im right.Ive been doing A/C work for 30yrs.
Sry OP!!
