question about a window unit AC

I grow in my windowless garage...block structure so for most of the year temp is not a prob to control...its hot summer days now and I need an AC...I can't really afford the portable kind at the moment but I can buy a small window unit...but I have no window...can I just build a frame for the unit to sit in as if it was sitting in a window and have somthing under it to catch condensation....will it work this way to keep garage cool?

Umm well u need to have the backside of the ac out of the room ur tryna cool otherwise all the hot air will not be removed from ur room. It will seem cool if ur standin right in front of the ac but it won't help the rooms temps unless its exhausting outside the room.

The back coil on a window unit is the condenser coil, and blows out Hot air.

Another reason its in the window,Besides the draining.

p.s. How big a space are you trying to cool?

Just save the $$ its only like 225 for a 10,000 btu ac with dehumidifyer on ebay. I bought a 12,000 btu lg and it keeps my room cool and i have 2 1000's and 1 600 along with a bunch of t5's

You can do it, but like sacboy said you have to counter act the heat the A/C produces. There are a few ways you might do this. I've considered similar ideas for my basement.

You can build a box around the back side of the AC with an exhaust fan pulling the hot air out some place. You would need to have a way to collect the condensation though, maybe make a drain at the bottom of the box. I've considered this closely.

You can also run a vent from the cold air outlet directly to where you are growing. Do you grow directly in this building, or inside a tent or room inside it? If you can have 2 seperate zones it would help I'm sure, but exhausting the hot air and dealing with the condensation are the 2 big things to deal with.

Edit: I think I've decided to just save an extra 100 and get me a portable for this summer. I'll unhook my dehumidifier and the AC shouldn't use that much more energy.:peace:

Thanks everyone for ur suggestions answers explanations and replies....I have an understanding now of how it works...I had never considered the coil exhausting the hot air...I see the best option is for the portable even if I have to pay extra it'll work better I'm sure...the space is a garage abt 15 by 10...feet...8 foot ceiling...block

And no I dont use a tent....just open room grow....but my grow area is small...I section off a small area to grow around 3decent size plants is what I usually run......so heat from lighting isnt really an issue....just the heat of summer.

With a portable you'll still have to exhaust the hot air out and drain the pan every few days.......make a wise choice:)

What up Vega????bongsmilie

I use a 6000 btu Window unit in a 24'x16' shop with a attic exhaust fan and it was 97 F here today and my max temp was 75, more around 70 the whole day. Starting up tomorrow, just did a stress test today on the hottest day of the year.

I use a 13,000 btu Delonghi portable unit that I have the ac exhaust running up into my attic, into a 6" Max Fan (hooked to a speed controller to match the speed of the ac exhaust) that blows into a carbon filter. Been working great for 2 years and I can roll it around in my room wherever with the ducting attached.

I have a perfect place to exhaust the hot air...there's an attic door that pulls down in the garage ceiling...that'll be the escape....I saw a portable at Sam's for $229.00 I think it was...I may as well invest in the portable cause this will be an issue every summer....thanks everyone for the help.....n what's up Bigger420

fuck portables I have two I'd sell but we aren't allowed to here.

It is really not that hard to knock a few blocks out of a wall. esp. if they are cinder blocks.

get a two pound minisledge and a cold chisel.

Probably do it in less than half hour.
