Shit's just getting out of control. Day 11 of flowering (30 day veg).

This week they got 3/4 strength Big Bloom and Tiger Bloom. I'm backing way off on the grow big, unless I'm missing something. I just don't need anymore vertical growth.

I tried to wait awhile before posting, and it's kinda paid off. The pics show a nice difference in growth. However, I'm pretty much at the vertical limit and it's day 11 of flower. I'm working on getting the light to its max position, but I'm kinda at a loss, so any suggestions are more than welcome.

Aside from the height, they've both clearly shown themselves to be female, so I'm stoked about that! The plant on the right has just been leading the way with its vertical growth, and the bottom branches aren't far behind.
IMG_8963.jpgIMG_8955.jpg

The left plant, which now has 4 dominant tops that are just gorgeous, has been filling out nicely all around.
IMG_8965.jpgIMG_8953.jpgIMG_8957.jpg

And last but not least, the Afghani Kush has been coming along VERY nicely. I really like this strain so far. I've got some 3 gal smart pots on the way. For all grows going forward, 5 gallon pots are just way too big for my tent. I should have known this by now, but you grow, you learn.
IMG_8959.jpg

That's all for this week. Just got in on the attitude June Promo when I picked up some pineapple chunk and some jack herer seeds (greenhouse variety). I'm a huge jack herer fan and don't have the money to spend on the sensi original, so I figured "fuck it" and I'll give this knock off a try. Not keeping my hopes up for the jack I'm used to from my local club, but they also just got shut down, so I gotta find my own!

Cheers all!

Can anyone tell me about defoliation and whether I should do it for these ladies? I've seen that allowing more light to lower bud sites increases production, but can't find a decent thread (that I dont have to create an account to view) that would answer this for me.

Anyone with any experience in defoliation? Bottoms of these plants look like they might could use it? First timer, so I have no clue.

Thanks!

Day 43 (13 of flower)

Just posting some updated pics of the buds forming. Watered with pH'd water last night as I noticed they were starting to look a bit under watered.

Also, the afghan kush was really stretching so I went ahead and topped her (no photo). Going to be transplanting to a 3 gal pot very shortly, at which point I'll be LST'ing a bit and then letting her run.

Ok now the pics.

So I went ahead and defoliated the left plant pretty heavily. Almost within days, the bud sites exploded with growth, now that they've got tons of light on them.

I also had to supercrop the right plant a bit, as it was getting WAY too large. Problem is, I think I did it like a noob, too close to the top. I'll post pics when I arrive home tonight.

Either way, Im not too worried. She's already had her lower colas push through the lower canopy in response and they're beefing up now as well.

Ya really. Once you put them in a pot where they can spread their roots, they just explode. it's really an amazing thing to watch.

I have uploaded full resolution versions of these images, which can be utilized directly via this link: http://imgur.com/a/xbRCs or by clicking on the individual images. Enjoy!
I accidentally sized the wider shots incorrectly, will fix for future uploads. Also, utilizing imgur significantly decreases the load times experienced via this site. Feedback welcome here as well.

So quite a lot has happened over the last 4 days. Super crops, burnt tops, plants too tall ... it was a crazy week dealing with these ladies, but it's been a lot of fun. The buds are really starting to form up, and the first sign of trichromes came today on the left plant (super tiny though). It has a subtle lemon/citrus smell that is not a problem by any means, and even if it were, I've no need to hide it as my house is rather hidden as it is. Anyway, I'll cover each plant on its own to make things a bit simpler and more in-depth.

I'll start with the left (topped) plant (BlueTooth #1) (pics below text, for all). Beginning 3 days ago, I defoliated much of 2 of her main colas in an attempt to see if it was a technique worth employing. Sure enough, within days, the two colas I defoliated had responded with increased bud growth at spots now exposed to direct light. As evidence, these defoliated colas were leaning out from center slightly more than the other two, which allowed the lower canopy to really start coming up. Regardless, I'm running out of vertical space for both of these plants. When the colas go to the far left of the tent, they're hidden from a good portion of the HID light, so I rigged up a T5HO I have laying around to make up for it. I still rotate the plant every 24 hours in order to give it good coverage.
IMG_8974.jpgIMG_8987.jpgIMG_8988.jpgIMG_8992.jpg

One of the colas got right up on the cool tube and was burned to shit, so I topped her delicately to preserve as much of the growing buds as possible.
IMG_8984.jpg

Moving on to the right plant (BlueTooth #2), things have been a bit stressful, for both the plant and myself. To begin with, she's exhibiting increased vertical growth over the past week and forced me to supercrop her. I may have done it like a noob, way too close to the top cola, and if so, I'll learn from it. Either way, I'm 100% dedicated to LST from here on out, and most likely scrog as my end goal. Anyway, after super cropping her, I noticed she was recovering a bit too much so figured I hadn't done it proper, and when I went back in the second time, I may have done too much. About 2/3 of the stem is still attached to itself, but I figured a splint couldn't hurt while it repairs itself. I was super hesitant to super crop during flowering, but I need to try it/learn it at some point so I went for it.
IMG_8977.jpgIMG_8986.jpgIMG_8990.jpgIMG_8991.jpg

And last but not least, the Afghani Kush plant that is now about 25 days old (sprouted on 21st of May). I plan on LST'ing tomorrow, right after I transplant into a 3 gal smart pot. I'll be using the same soil formula of Fox Farms Ocean Forest cut with perlite at 2:1, roughly. You can see I topped her (about 5 days ago) and the 4 main colas are really getting going now. I'm considering mainlining, though it may be a bit advanced for my still-growing skillset. If anyone has any recommendations about this, feel free.

As always, thanks for stopping by and let me know if you see something I missed, have some input, or just wanna shoot the shit!

I found a brilliant thread on defoliation...first there's an article on growweedeasy.com here...http://www.growweedeasy.com/marijuana-defoliation-tutorial
then that has a link to the blokes thread. It's a good read.

Your plants look amazing, but they're so tall! Mine are very similar age but tiny compared to yours. I did LST and will post you a pic in mo when I get to the end of your thread. x

Oh My Gosh, your plants are e-nor-mous! Ha ha this is brilliant as I have one girl left (other two went hermie...grrr) who is a similar age (day 60) and she's miniature compared to your monsters! Here have a look...(she's also severely droopy...)

She's Jamaican Pearl (Sativa) and I LST'd her from about 2 weeks. No topping or FIMing, just LST and defoliation. You should def try LST next time.
This is great as I can check in on you to compare with mine. Hilarious they are so different.

Yours look amazing so keep up the good work!

Thanks for the link. I actually ended up stumbling upon the very same link and decided to just go for it. You can see it more on the left plant than the right, but I end up taking a few fan leaves here and there as time progresses.

Anyway, thanks for the link! Your pearls look like great little plants, I definitely need to LST/Scrog for my next plants. This shit is out of control huge!

I guess then I'm doing perfectly fine, I gave mine decent root's space. :P
Nice. As a result of this oversight, I've gone out and bought 3gal pots for the future. Although, I may try the 5gal again if I go to scrog. We'll see. Regardless, I think this plant's got considerably more sativa in her than I originally thought. That stretch is just crazy.

Outdoor Update - Blue Tooth
Full image gallery available here (full res)

Earlier in the thread, right before I flipped to 12/12, I cut 2 clones from each plant. After the explosive growth of my 2 main plants, I ended up having to find friends to take the clones. I had no space for them, and I knew the genetics were at least decent enough to share, so I found them new homes. All except for one, that is. After rooting, I decided I would put one outside, just to compare.

IMG_8994.jpgIMG_8995.jpgIMG_8997.jpg

So far she seems to be doing really well. I potted her in a 3 gallon smart pot (w handles). The soil is FFOF with perlite in a 1:2 ratio (same as indoor plants). She spent the first few days rooting in the new soil, and now I'm seeing vertical growth. I have no plans to top her, but I'm hoping some of you outdoor folks can give me some tips? If my girlfriend tidies up her garden, I'll have a permanent spot to put her, but for now it's pots. I have some 5 gal smart pots that I'll likely transplant to once I buy some more soil tomorrow, but I'll wait on the transplant til its spread its roots out nicely. I'm going to wait about a month to feed the outdoor plant, as the FFOF should hold up for awhile.

As always, feel free to comment, share your own pics, or point something out you think I might be missing. Cheers!

Day 49 - 19 of Flower
It's more like day 27 for the AK below

Just cheking in, no pics because they're in dark at the moment. I went in and pulled the afghan kush out in order to repot her. She was exhibiting signs of under watering, so it was just in the nick of time.

I started by mixing 2 gal of FFOF and roughly 1 gal of perlite. Dropped that into a 3gal pot and transplanted the AK. I aerated the roots considerably before dropping her in and reburied the stem a bit as well. I tried to gently pack it in to avoid it resettling after watering, but it didn't help too much and the rockwool is showing a bit. I'm well aware this has no bearing on the plant itself. It's purely an aesthetic thing for me. Oh well. I'll get it right one day.

So, she's off. I'll be LST'ing her once she roots a bit and regains her strength from the lack of water.

In other news, the blue tooth plants continue to grow vertically. I'm open to ideas at this point, but I may just have to do my best to arrange the colas so as to not hit the top of the tent. I may super crop them, if someone can tell me that it's safe this far into flower. I'll post some pics tonight regardless.

Cheers!

Day 51 - Flower day 21
Full resolution gallery available here.

Well it's been 4 days since I've posted pics of the indoor plants, so figured I should. They've both continued their stretch and I'm scrambling to keep them off the cool tube, but still in the light. I tried tying them down to the smart pots, but it wasn't really working too well, so I had to start using the poles on the opposite side. Even still the plants stretched right up to the top again. Considering the right plant wasn't phased at all by the super cropping, I went for it with the remaining colas on the left plant as well. My only consolation is that I'm already planning to never have plants this tall again. I'm building a new scrog net and beginning the training of the AK plant as soon as the new tips are a bit stronger. Here's the pics. I won't go into too much detail tonight. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
