In the hands of an acquaintance from adolescence (or more accurately, on his improvised drop hammer rig), pure samples of nitroglycerin and pentolite were about equal in their sensitivity to shock. (RDX, although it has excellent brisance, was less sensitive to impact.) The two can be ( ... very! ... carefully! ... ) compounded into a paste that he found superior: the paste had no density issues (like dry pentolite) and had a balanced fuelxygen ratio. It was much easier to handle than either pure or gelled nitroesters.
Nitroglycerin has a peculiarity. If you use an underpowered blasting cap, you can induce a lower-order detonation that wastes much of the material's brisance. Dynamite didn't have this property to the same degree. cn
