Alaska. 907. The last frontier. Who lives there? Who been there? Who wants to go?

What's life like in Alaska? I've thought about retiring there, building a cabin like they did back in the day and live out my old age, dooable? Impossible? Am I dreaming?

Shit seems pretty cold from a Californian's perspective..
Very do-able. Get land, build house, hook up utilities, and do it to it! Nothin' to it but to do it they say!

View attachment 2453348 How bout -99? Been there done that.
That thermometer is whacked by more than a few degrees.
The coldest recorded temp in AK was;
"-79.8°F - rounded off to -80°F - observed at Prospect Creek Camp in the Endicott Mountains of northern Alaska on Jan. 23, 1971. The Prospect Creek Camp is along the Alaska pipeline about 20 miles north of the Arctic Circle".

We saw - 68 degrees (Northway) when we were in Tok.
Damn cold regardless.

Yeah, I'm guessing the thermometer was broken. I've briefly experienced negative nineties on the Slope, but it was really in the -30's plus wind chill. Coldest ambient I've experienced is -52 or so. These recent temps in the Anchorage bowl suck too. At least it is only -0.5 right now.

I saw -80 on my chevy temperature gauge in Tok, AK in 2006/2007. Worked on the north slope long enough to know that with the right ambient/wind chill combination, -99 can be done. Needless to say.. yeah, cold.

My coldest was about -65 ambient with -85 chill. They would only let us work outside 10 minutes out, 30 minute warmup. Good old drillsite 6 in Prudhoe. Hate that drillsite.

Oh, I hadn't considered that mometer might be reading windchill (I was thinking ambient).
- 100 w/c is pretty common in the interior. That dead ass cold combined with a 30kt wind & poof, triple digit numbers.
That combination means I drink indoors !

The school in Tok stayed open to -50 (ambient), after that the little buggers got to stay home.

Well, on slope, -20 is a cutoff for hydraulic equip without variances, -35 ambient for work, -70 w/c for work. so, -25 with a -55 wind chill... we were working. -40 no wind chill, we weren't. Kinda messed up. Windchill effects humans way more. But... they are so sissified up on the slope it makes me sick. They had to adjust these figures for all the pussies that come from florida and texas and what not... they cant hack it. a 30 year alaskan can if he has the right gear.
