Is there anything that would have stopped Adam Lanza from the massacre?

If this sort of thing is to be prevented in future, how can that be accomplished?
Maybe properly locking your guns is a start in the right direction. If these guns were stored in a way where he didn't have access to them, then he would not have taken those guns to kill his mom and the kids. Could he have bought a gun at a gun show maybe. But this kid seems like an idiot and pursuing a weapon outside of the home may have been difficult.

I am right in the middle on this one. This is a crazy tragedy is horrible and disscusting and these seem to be more frequent. I think it is a combination of things, bad gun safety, lack of access to mental health help, society that glorifies violent games and movies, no back round check at gun shows or internet purchases. I am sure I am missing other important factors contributing to the rise in gun violence.

On the other hand I feel one day down the road when the worlds super powers are struggling and competing for resources and our country comes under attack I want our citizens to armed ready locked and loaded. I don't want other countries invading us with automatic weapons and we only have handguns and single shot rifles. We all know civilizations come and go and the united states can't last forever, but i'd like to think we could protect ourselves if shit hits the fan.

Peace

Here's another idea; how about retired armed service men and women serving guard post at each entrance to all the schools. it would create jobs and offer another sense of service to retired and active duty soldiers... maybe with the national guard or something like that... I'm positive that there would be proud men and women who would gladly serve by protecting these children's lives.

Teachers aren't allowed to have unions, they are paid too well and now you want to force them to carry weapons and go to the range twice a month right?

I just don't see how this sort of thing happened in the first place. Didn't our left leaning friends make schools, gun free zones?

Preach it brother. Because the rich investing in other countries and lowering GDP fixes a struggling economy.

There is but a single detectable correlation between mass shootings and culture. The more disparate the income between the poor and the rich, the more there are mass shootings. It seems as though the overall reason for these shotings is social inequality. Countries that have less of this social inequality have fewer shootings. If that is the case then taxing the rich would reduce mass shootings.

Is this one of those correlation = causation things?

If so then its the demise of the passenger pigeon that is to blame for all of our woes. Ever notice that since they went extinct that things have been going downhill? Proof, right?

Countries that have less social equality have less shootings? You pulled this statement from the ass did you not?

South Africa and Columbia have have a very high level of social inequality, yet have more shooting deaths than any country in the world. By far.

Here is your problem. you can't find any correlation at all. It isn't the percentage of guns in a community, it isn't the form of entertainment, it isn't drugs (much as some would love it to be that way). The only correlation to be found is the one I mentioned. If that is the case, you folks havn't got a solution or even an idea as to a solution. I do.

true, but there are 'low hanging fruit' cases that can easily be stopped.

a simple fucking gun safe would have prevented lanza and the oregon mall guy.

we can never stop them all but simple gun safety would prevent plenty.
I assume you have proof of the claim that the guns were not stored in a locked container or vault and were instead just haphazardly strewn about the home fully loaded with ammo.

So south Africa has no gun deaths? Same with Columbia? Really? Facts show otherwise.

In Israel, every citizen is required to have military training upon reaching the age of 18, then they serve 2 years in Israels military. I believe every able minded and able bodied American citizen should have at the very least mandatory basic training with firearms, and all citizens in a position of caring for others, such as school teachers who care for our children - it should be mandatory that they carry a firearm with them to school. If the first room Lanza entered with a gun was equipped with an armed citizen the outcome of the situation would be different. If the teachers of the room he went in were armed as well as the neighboring rooms teachers, we might have lost one or a few kids, but the rest would be alive. Guns are not going away, and to make an area "gun free" just means law abiding citizens won't have them to defend themselves with. Teachers in Israel carry firearms, and in the last 10 years there has only been 8 shooting deaths in Israeli schools, compare this to the hundreds of shooting deaths in USA's "gun free" school zones. If you don't want to arm the teachers and staff of the school, at least pull these less than useless narcotics officers off the potheads and install them at every entrance to every school.

I think the only thing that would prevent this is have a minimal of 2 officers in every school.
As a deterrent that is a good idea, but for some wacko who insists on taking things to this level, I am afraid it would only increase the body count by 2 officers. Besides 2 officers cannot be everywhere at once.

You want a governemnt that does not intrude in the affairs of its citizens making it manditory, regardless of one's religious beliefs or moral comprehensions to be trained with weapons of war. Israel has a rather "equal" distribution of wealth and income btw. Now it is not the shooting deaths that need to be counted but the number of incidences that were ended by teachers with weapons.
