I do not like aggressive panhandlers.
I liked it in the good old days when if you seen a needy person it was easy to
tell they were down on there luck. Now it is a business model to sit on the corner with a sign
and guilt trip my family. I give where and when I feel like it.
A gas station I used to frequent back in California had a 'regular' there, who would wash as many windows as his little arms would let him every day, all day....
Sometimes I would see him in the morning when I stopped for gas, then still there in the evening 11 hrs later when I stopped for beer or a monster drink, and never once was he pushy, or rude.
I only saw him walk away with empty hands from some, or with donations from others, but he would not ask.
He would simply finish, wish the driver a nice day, and start to walk away, genuinely depending on the goodness in people's hearts to feed him.
When I saw this pattern, sometimes I would even take him leftovers in the morning from the previous night's dinner, and I kinda felt bad when he got to know my 2 cars, 2 trucks, and the wife's car because he would drop whatever window he was on, and come running as soon as he saw me, never disappointed, even if I only had some coins or couple dollars to give.
People like that I don't mind, but I used to try and kick the vagrant that sat on the sidewalk outside the liquor store begging for money after he actually followed my wife INTO the store one night, not realizing that I was in the truck right behind her as she pulled in.
After I grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and drug him back outside like a dog, he would get up and walk to the other side of the parking lot whenever he saw me coming.
EDIT:
I also used to give a guy that would sit in front of McDonalds a burger or something once in a while when I came out, but not cash, as there were two liquor stores within easy walking distance.

I feel ya, but I'm more sympathetic to the ones that worry about food first or look like they might be even trying to get food for family or somebody I might not see.
In a REAL bind, one can go without beer, but not without food IMO.

I legit saw a dude in downtown Seattle like 10 years ago with a sign reading "need beer, honest" I gave that dude money.
I've seen an old dude holding a sign "need money for vodka and cigs". then there was the young dude with the sign "stoner, need weed please".
The only time I gave a panhandler money was when this guy came up to me and says "gimmie a dolla" , I'm like wtf you gonna do if I give you a dollar, he was like "I'm gonna get me some beer man!" . so I gave him the fucking dollar.

No, the honest ones like that are fine, and you have to at least momentarily admire their ability to admit what they want cash for, knowing good and well that most people would hear that as a last reason NOT to give money.

Ya, I never got into the hockey thing, though he did invite me to go a few times, but we worked together, and used to play darts and drink together.
Your screen name kinda brought back memories, 'cause I remember he used to keep a pipe in the ashtray of his S-10, and would hit it on the way to work, again when he got there, again when we left for lunch, we'd have a burger and couple games of pinball, then he'd hit it again on the way back to the shop, sometimes again in the afternoon if things were slow, and again on his way home.
Funny-although I couldn't smell it at all in his truck, he gave an OLD lady (probably in her 70's at least) a ride home after she dropped off her Cadillac one morning, and came back to tell me that immediately after getting in, she hollered at him "Ya'll been smokin' chronic up in here!"

We had one in the city I lived in as well, sign said "why lie, I need a dollar for a beer" Everyone gave that dude money. I chatted him up a few times, he got a little crazy when he started to talk about 'Nam.

do not get me started on the beggars. especially in the walmart parking lot. it never fails, i get out of my car and here they come, hands out.

the last one was a woman, about 55 i'd say, dressed a little better then your average beggar. she made a beeline for me, eyes all red, i could tell she was drunk or on something and it wasn't pot. she had a pack of marlboro in her hand (you're smoking? you don't need my money.) she says i need money. i say for what? she raised her eyes and said what's it to you. and let the fun begin. i bet she doesn't ask me for money again.

if they say i need $5 for gas, i offer them a ride to the gas station to buy them gas, they always say no. i say i will go get it and bring it back to them at their car, they say no. a guy at stoplight came up to my car and said he was hungry. i had no cash but i had a beautiful apple and i handed that to him. he walked away and threw the apple down to the ground. fucker, i wanted that apple too.

one time inside the store a guy walked up to me and said my car broke down about a mile up the road and i don't have any cash. he said i have this walmart card with $250 on it. can you use it to buy your stuff and give me the cash? now i thought that was original and pretty ballsy. i said i don't see why not but i am no where near being done shopping so you gotta wait. he said ok and helped me shop. that guy ran to get this and that even toting the new trash can i was buying throughout the store. we get to the checkout and i asked the clerk to run the card so i could see how much was on it, $250 just like he said. that kid helped bag and load the cart and even after i handed him the $250 helped load the stuff in the back of the truck. he earned the extra $10 i gave him.

i give to charities not panhandlers :eyesmoke:
