syria: iran's path to the sea

Iran has lots of coast. I was in the gulf when Iran and Iraq were at war. Our US Navy gave Iran an old diesel sub and they filled it with high quality steel, waited for excellent weather and steamed across the Atlantic on the surface. Couldn't submerge and rise due to the weight. It's only a couple days steaming through the Persian Gulf into the Suez to reach the Med.

I must be missing something, and I'm betting this has to do with a gaffe by one of our prospective leaders. I mean, like, duh, Syria and Iran don't even touch! Unless the Iranians have a plan of threading a path between Iraq and a roast bird. cn

Okay, then I guess it's time for me to ask about Iran's s̶a̶n̶d̶y̶ ̶v̶a̶g̶i̶n̶a̶ secret tunnel ... cn

Iraq does not have the military to resist Iran even if they wanted to. If Syria falls in line with Iran, the middle doesnt mean much.

Probably something to do with the fact that we blew it up a few times over the last few decades...

draw the syria-iran border for me, please.

Draw me a picture of how Iran gets to the sea without syria...

its not really an atlas if it also has the word "shrugged" on the cover.

you must be totally high right now.

im not even sweatin romney's brainfart. he was workin his ass off playin monkey in the middle between obama and the "Totally Impartial Moderator" and their tag team interruptions and strawmen.

BTW, love your map made of crayons Bucky!

I'll bet the blogger who started this comedy was stoned and not paying attention (wonder why lol) to the debate. Although it makes for a cute little gottcha moment, for those who understood what Mitt Romney was talking about, it makes perfect sense.

Here's what I got out of it. Romney specifically said that Iran's only ally in the region is Syria and Syria is Iran's path to the sea. For those still stoned, the Black Sea and the Caspian are not true seas connected to the open ocean, they're lakes.

The only other strategic paths to the open sea (Mediterranean) is either Turkey to the north or Lebanon to the south, neither of these two countries are close to being allies of Iran.
Therefore it is in Iran's best interest to keep Syria as a strategic ally!

dude. the gulf of oman is part of the pacific ocean.

gulf of oman is just a big fjord off the arabian sea which is part and parcel with the indian ocean, and the south pacific.

from the gulf of oman any deep water freighter can sail from iran to san francicsco without ever passing through a canal a lock or a portage.

The Caspian is a lake with pretensions; conceded. But Iran doesn't come close to the Black Sea. However the Gulfs to the south are a seaway to the Indian Ocean, and the circumnavigation of Arabia to use the Suez is a lot less onerous than having to round the Horn and then sail the full length of the Med. Fwiw. The whole thing is as artificial as Poland laying claim to the Gdansk corridor, or Austro-Hungary seeking to grab the Istrian coast. cn
