We're all dicks..

Who said anything about fault? The fact is that there are alot of starving children out there that could really use our help and we aren't gonna do shit about it. Face it, we're all dicks.

It's selfish to point the finger at a country and say it's their fault therefore you don't have to help. It's just an excuse (like your dogs).

I'm being realistic.. I'm not gonna help (well maybe someday I will) because I'm a dick like the rest of you. It just sucks we can be this way you know?
Here's something not immediately obvious: food charities start out about the food, but very quickly evolve into organizations dedicated to solving a problem that has won and lost wars: logistics. Getting the food to the right place in time is much more expensive than the food, especially in corrupt and contested areas. In the 90s the great scandal was Ethiopia/Eritrea and the adjoining Sudan, where local authorities confiscated food shipments to the interior, with the deliberate aim of starving their opponents. cn

I can understand starving in a place where there is no food, but in America there is excess in someway on every street corner...so...I don't understand how people starve in the US without the help of serious drug issues, or under the small chance they are being held captive, which is a totally different problem...lol.

I don't think it's normal that children's pay for their parents mistakes but unfortunately the reality say's otherwise. Many peoples makes a living out of others poverty that sucks. You see the publicity on T.V. of little black guy in Africa with flyes all around the eyes diying of hunger in front of the camera, a very pitiful scene, what percentage of your gift actually reach the victims? and what percentage goes in the production of their next heart breaking publicity instead? If you take a look at the financial stats from the UN most of the cash donated pay for salary within those "charity" organization.

Not too mention that the food that does make it over there is traded for guns and other weapons.

They've been playing those starving children commercials for over 30 years. Maybe they need to fix the root of the problem.

Here. Pick a child and sponsor them. Childfund International (used to be known as Christian Children's Fund) gives one of the biggest portions of their actual donations directly towards the people needing it instead of it going towards things like overhead and administration costs. They've won lots of respected awards for it. And you can buy your kid presents and stuff. And you can buy like...livestock for people and all kinds of things. So there. You can sleep better at night knowing you're helping someone who really needs it.

We'll never be able to eradicate all the commercials. Just one has to escape ... hundreds of eggs ... calamity all over again. cn

I don't mind the food stamp program. I'd rather pay taxes and know people can get food if they really need it than walk aound seeing hungry starving people everywhere.

Now the cash programs could use some tweaking but I think that's more due to the fact they're just outdated. The rules that were recently set in motion like the time limits on how long you can be on public aid seems like a good start. Women especially used to be dependent on aid for the rest of their lives if they were single mothers. But times have changed, women can work and have jobs now. So the welfare system should change to reflect that not a whole lot of people should permanently be on aid.

There are generations of families living off the system. The system's broke. It's only going to get worse, especially with this year's drought.

Nobody should PERMANENTLY be on aid.....but there are people out there who have degrees and are Alumni from many colleges and still can't get a job.....Even fast food restaurants wouldn't hire my mother because they said she was "overqualified". There is alot more to it than meets the eye.......The U.S. isn't flooded with jobs. And when it is you see a huge flock of immigrants to come steal them.

Well I was thinking like...you know...severly handicapped people that are never going to be able to work. They're obviously going to need assistance for their entire lives.

Oh yes.....that is what SSI is for.
Well OK. But they need food stamps too don't they? I assume...SSI isn't a whole lot of money...is it? I had an ex with a son once, he got SSI for him, and the kid didn't even have anything wrong with him. It was ridiculous. When he was born, his tongue was too big for his mouth. So he had surgery on it. He had a lisp. A LISP. That the doctor said would go away as he got older and he kinda grew into his tongue (lol sorry I know it sounds weird). And he got $550 a month in SSI. For what? He didn't have to take speech therapy or anything...there weren't any additional costs to taking care of him as compared to a kid born with a normal sized tongue...I never understood why his dad was able to get SSI for him...

550?? My brother gets 900 a month because he is schizophrenic. It is because he can't work ANYWHERE without beating someone up lol. I know a bunch of guys who act like they are insane just to get the money.....That pisses me off because they keep cutting my bro's check lower and lower. And it is because of the people trying to "cheat the system"
