April i think your missing the fact that bad guys or girls will always be able to get guns! Sure you can shut down
gun plants and production of them, but third world countrys will make them and sell to the US in black market
vendors! Hense arming bad people and disarming you and I. What we need is a justice system that doesnt just
release these criminal back to the public because the jails are full! What we need is decriminalize MJ! Opening
up jail space fore real criminals. Theres more than one way to skin a cat! Yah there will always be first time criminal

Based on those posts, he didn't really seem aggressive and you seemed to call him out on it. i was simply voicing my opinion that since you told him to basically "chill", i saw no reason for him to do so. I think the weak link in this chain of reason is imagining that "not allowed/permitted" equates to "not doing so". Here in Baja Canada, the crooks are definitely not allowed to be armed ... and yet, and yet.
So I would suggest that it is precisely in those areas where interest in gun control is greatest (large cities in states with restrictive gun laws) that permitted carry would have the largest salutary effect.

Another structural problem is this: deaths and injuries due to gunfire are dead (!) easy to tabulate. Crimes prevented/aborted due to a show of armed resistance are much harder to count.
In 2000, total USA gun deaths plus injuries, deliberate andor accidental (incl. suicides and attempts) numbered appx. 104000 as per Wikipedia.
The estimates I've seen for effective DGUs (defensive gun uses, for those unfamiliar with this odd corner of sociology) range from a hundred thousand to 2.5 million per annum. I hesitate to say that grants DGUs "parity at least" with harm from guns, because obviously the methodology for counting DGUs is not working.

What I challenge is the concept that our society is so evolved. A good test for an evolved society would be a ploice force that can operate almost all of the time ... unarmed.
Until that comes to pass outside more cohesive societies like Britain and Japan ... I say let us embrace our primitivity and WORK on making society ready to walk away from armed conflict at the local scale. But imo trying to make society less violent by restricting the tools of defense away from those who would comply with the restriction ... is placing that particular cart squarely in front of the horse.
I grew up with the conceit that we were moderns at last, that gun violence was a declining trend, that gun ownership was an anachronism. So I get it. But i am finding that the celebration was premature, and the insistence that it's a workable solution is sustained by (ideological) stubbornness and not fact. My opinion. cn
