New guy with some questions.

Hey everybody, I've been doing a little research here and there on growing my on cannabis and I decided to take the leap and do it myself. There is a great deal of info that I'm finding but sometimes it's just an overload to take in so I have a few questions I want to ask to get me going in the right track.

I have germinated a seed and placed it in my flower pot. I noticed today that the plant has finally emerged from the soil.
My first question is what lighting should I be using for this? I'm using a grow space that is about 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide in depth and width. I have to lights here with me at my home that I can use for now until I can get some better lights if need to. The first light is a 90WATT 120V flood light, and the other light I have just sitting around is a soft white 75 WATT light bulb. I don't care to yield a high amount, just enough to enjoy for me and my girlfriend. I don't know the strain of the weed and I know that may be a problem to help answer my questions, but I'm trying to give as much info as possible. My second question is what else do I need to purchase to keep the plant healthy, and can I purchase these things at a home depot, lowes, ect..I've also got a little fan to help with cooling. My main concerns are nutrition and lighting and lighting cycles. If I could receive some help in these departments I'll feel much more comfortable about my first grow.

hmm 90 watt flood light sounds like a halogen stay away from this and the light bulb sounds like a incandecent

what is you budget and i will help you a bit more untill i know what you have to spend i dont want to go suggesting things that arent practical for you

edit, you can take them lights off the plant for the moment and find some sort of CFL
CFL.jpg

once you get the CFL put it about 3 inches aaway from the plant directly above it, at this stage the seedling will stretch and bend to get to light and you want to prevent this.

it sounds to me that the lights that you have now won't work well for you honestly...
look around the house and see if you can't find some cfl bulbs, they are those newer spiral shaped bulbs that you use in place of older incadesent style bulbs.. if you have any of them around the house right now, just use them for time being...
if you don't have much money, you can go over to say home depot or lowes or w/e, and buy as many of the biggest actual wattage cfl bulbs that you can find in the 6500k bulbs for now.. the k rating will be written on the front of the package somewhere.. you want the 65k ones for veg and the 2700k ones for flower.. you can mix and match if you like as well..
the more lights that you can fit, afford, the bigger your plants will grow and the faster they will do so as well so long as it doesn't get too hot in the grow space..
or if you have a lil more money and want better results, the next step up in what are called t5 lights.. they are long tube flouros, and will grow better plants then cfl's alone.. of course you could use a t5 and cfl's together for even better growth..
the next step up from t5's would be hid, or high intesisty discharge lighting which include metal halide, which are generally used for vegetive growth and high pressure sodium, hps, which are used for flowering.. both of these types of bulbs require what is called a ballast, which is used to send electricity at a high rate to the bulbs to fire them.. you can usually get a full hid setup, including bulbs, ballast and hoods online from places like high tech garden supply to name just one.. they range from around $200 or so all the way up to pretty much the skies the limit...
as for nutrients, i'm not sure what home depot and lowes carries, but you should look for anything that says organic on the bottle.. this would be your best bet to not burn your plants and give great tasting results..
or, you could also order some online from any number of hydro stores.. a nice cheap easy to use brand is the fox farms trio.. it's obviously a three part and runs around $60 or o the trio and gives nice results and is easy to use ime..

hope that helps some and points you in the right direction.. :)

Why do I want to prevent this?

. These seeds are from a mid grade cannabis at best. I wanted to try and grow this first before purchasing seeds and spending a decent amount of time on this and not have any product. I'll spend what's needed for the this 1 plant grow for now. If it even turns out remotely well I will focus on a much larger grow build and a more efficient space for my future plants later on down the road.

bro if you cant afford all the high priced shit...for starters get you some red party cups to start your plant in and remember to polk drain holes in the bottom.go to home depot or lowes and get some mg organic potting soil for 4 bucks.some mg(miracal grow)bone and blood meal for p and n but youll use mostly the blood meal for nitrogen during its veg stage.get you say about 4 lights and buy 4 2 way adaptors for light bulbs theyre about 2.50 a pop at the depot depending on where u go i went to ace and got my bulbs for 2 bucks a pop get you 8 23,26 0r 27w 6500k cfls and when you get to flowering get the same amount of watt bulbs that u have for flowering or more if you can afford but they have to be 2700k for flowering or you could mix em up by putting 1 6500k to every 3 2700k.you dont have to buy nuets right now you wont start feeding them that until 2-3 weeks from soil and one more thing its very important get a ph tester you can go to your hydroponics store and get the cheap stips which i use and they work great.gl bro and dont over or under water them.water everyother-3 days as they gets bigger stick your finger in the top soil if dry then water or let them get dry pick it up then water and pic up that way u can tell when its dry and its not.try to keep your bulbs 1 1/2 2 inches away as close as possible to the top of your plant without burning it.and u must have fans bro the more bulbs the more or bigger the fans

based on this, i'd really suggest going with at least a 250 watt hps / mh setup... this would be a great fit for your sized setup and for only one or two plants, you'd be golden..
i'll try and find a few links for lighting options for you.. like i was telling you earlier, you will want an hps bulb for flowering and a mh for veg.. you can get away with using either the mh or the hps for the full grow if you'd like to save a bit of coin.. the older magnetic ballast usually only fire either the hps bulbs or the mh bulbs, but the newer digital ballast can run both, although they cost a bit more upfront, i tend to like them over the older mag ballasts when all is said and done..
brb with a few links for you to check out.. :)

first off if its is a halogen light it puts of 10x more heat then usable light, the distance you will have to keep it away from the plant will just end up with a long stretchy plant. the other bulb if it is a incandecent is the same as halogen.

if you dont want to spend alot of money i suggest head to wal mart (this is where i found best CFL bulbs) and pick up a 2 pack of 6500k 26w CFL and a 3 pack of 2700k 26w CFL, this will run you about 10 bucks.

next stop go pick up a bag of soil, any kind will do but buy it and buy some thats reasonably decent as some soils have bugs in them and you dont want that shit. have the PH tested and if its below 6.6 (6.8 is the best) get a bit of lime to mix in with the soil, starting with the correct pH will save you loads of trouble in the long run

Thanks man! You guys are really responsive really fast. I feel like I've already learned a lot. I think I should probably scrap my grow box and do it right. So would a PC style grow box fit my needs? Also is that a beginner build that I could handle on my own? (I am referring to the building of the home that the plant will use).

Mj really isnt hard to grow there is just a few things you have to have and that is....

correct PH soil
correct lighting (flourecent or HID)
and food.
soil that drains well

these are the baisics, theres tons of other shit you can get into if you want to grow the best of the best but if your just looking to keep it simple make sure these 4 things i mentioned are in place and you should be off to a good start
