Realistic Yields

After shopping around for seeds at several different seed banks, one thing I did notice was the inconsistency in reported yields. I decided on a strain of Afghan (predominantly Indica), what can I expect it to yield outdoors? I should add I will be starting them indoors in about a week or so and moving them outdoors late April, early May. Also if there is anyone who has grown an Afghan strain and has any tips I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

you can get pounds if you have perfect conditions. i average 1/2 lb per plant outdoors. various strains.

Sounds lovely, but since I'll be growing in the woods my guess is my 'perfect conditions' are shot to shit. But I would take a 1/2 lb any day :D Thanks for the reply.

Yield varies on several factors some of which you can control and some of which you cant. Some of the things you can control are putting your plants in an area where they can gets lots of direct light (however you mentioned youre growing in the woods so that may be hard), soil quality, proper watering and fertilizing, and good plant management (staking and tieing offshoots when necesary). Most of the things you cant control are related to the quality of the seeds you are getting, if the seeds come from a good stock and have been breed to be high yielders then youre lucky however some seed banks are inconsistent in seed quality so if possible try clones. i've heard of 3,4,+ lbs off of trees but not in my yard. 1/2 lb dry, manicured, trimmed and jarred.

perfect was the wrong word. under excellent conditions: southern facing hillside, good soil, good drainage, minimal pests......

Outdoors last year a Friend of mine grew an Afghani outside in his back yard and he harvested 9 Oz and 4 grams from a single plant. Mind you he has been growing for years and tends to his plants every needs.

I know he limes his garden and has a compost pile that he maintains and uses for his fertilizer.
He also bags them in august to get them to be ready in the middle of October for harvest. By bagging them I mean he covers them during the evening to induce flowering earlier than what nature does a month later. This allows him plenty of room for the weather to get cold early and it does not affect his plants because they are already done by the time the cold moves in.

shouldnt you plant it on a eastern facing hillside? i heard plants like the morning sunlight more than the evening sunlight. is this true?

well first of all the hill statement is completly false because it all depends on where you live. in the united states, being in the northern hemisphere, the sun is in the northern sky, from east to west obviously. but it all depends on the season and location. in the southern hemisphere the sun is more to the south, the opposite of the northern hemisphere. you cannot gereralize that statement.

Yup i've seen this on many sites that the morning sun is like the plants more that the evening sunlight.

correct me if im wrong but the sun would be in the "south sky" in the northern hemisphere, not the north because the sun goes east to west on a southward axis, or angle from the ground called an azimuth...anyway yea southlight is best.

no the sun would be in the north sky in the nornthern hemishpere. these angles are known as the azimuth and altitude angles. Its correct to say that on any specific place on earch its better to plant facing a certain direction, but just gererally naming a directing and applying it to everyone couldnt be more wrong. I have tons of papers on this as its what i study in school. tomorrow i will scan some of them so that you guys can get a better understanding.

i keep hearin that by tieing outdoor plants to the ground when they get like 3-4 feet they will yield a lot more because light gets to the plant and new colas are formed. Has anyone tried this and is it really a lot better?
