Is there any difference in the spectrum with a hps vs a mh, because i would like to veg with hps, also whats the advantage if any of buying the enhanced "blue" spectrum bulbs?

mh bulbs produce a blue light which is great for leaf growth etc and hps produce a red light which is great for flower growth so if you veg with a hps they usually dont grow as fast and if you flower with a mh yeild will be smaller,,,,,you wana use a hps from start to finish,eventhough youll havta veg for a little longer yeild shouldnt be effected,,,you could use a dual spectrum bulb however,which produces both red and blue light,,,,peace

According to new information from Ed Rosenthall (spelling) & brought forth in another thread by SeeMore Buds, Metal Halide is a waste of time & offers no benifit what so ever in any stage of plant development.

HPS works fine for veg, been using a 400HPS over my mums for about 8 years. Plants veg just as vigorously under HPS as MH but HPS will produce somewhat more elongated mainstems than MH. I prefer HPS for vegging mums in my zero-veg time (for clones) SoG op as it gives me longer stems for my style of cloning. Taller cuttings do better in a SoG style op.
I've used a 400MH conversion lamp on the mums, which worked fine, but yielded much closer internodal spacing and fewer tall stems for my cuttings. I went back to the 400HPS and the MH sits on the shelf.

I'm gonna use hps throughout the veg and flowering cycles. I'm just wondering if the bulb with blue spectrum is worth the extra 30 bucks for it.

if you have the money, i say go for it. check to to how many lumens it puts out.

digi ballasts dont have as long of a warranty though... i also heard they dont save that much electricity.

They would only save a small amount of elecrisity, but the bonus is that most will run a MH bulb and a HPS bulb, mine do and it's working out great for me.

Not really necessary and especially not if you won't be vegging with that HPS. If you will be vegging with the HPS, the added blue will help shorten internodal distances.

Electronic control gear doesn't save that much power at all. In example, an electronic Lumatek 600 draws 55W less than a standard magnetic- that's a 9% savings. 9% might be significant if you have a lot of ballasts but not generally if you're running just a couple of them.
Doesn't matter how hot or cool a ballast runs (or how big it is) if it is located outside the grow room airmass- which is kind of the point of a remotely mountable ballast, innit?
My roughly 10 year old magnetic ballasts are not totally silent, but they don't buzz- just a dull hum, inaudible more than a couple hundred mm away and certainly inaudible over the whoosh of circ fans. Only really poor quality magnetic ballasts will develop any buzz, due to inductor laminations that are not well secured. Better ballasts have bolted core laminations, which keeps them silent for many years.
