Today's pot vs. pot from the 60's

I used to smoke a lot in the late 60's early 70's and absolutely do not remember having real BUD to smoke...only what I remember as leaves. It was stoner stuff which had to be sativa, and got you real high, but there were no buds to be found in the product.
So question: now all we smoke are the buds, but back in the day, were leaves sold and smoked instead?

Absolutely!! In fact, I didn't know MJ had "bud". The only thing I recognized was the iconic "fan leaf". I well remember what some of the pot "back in the day" looked like and we were clearly smoking a lot of leaf. That has been my contention for the last few years as to why the pot today is supposedly higher in THC than the pot back then, but the best pot now does not even remotely compare to the best pot back then. I remember tripping my brains out on several strains, Colombian gold, Acapulco gold, Panama red, man those were just mind blowing and the more you smoked the higher you got.

I remember Purple Indica, It was THE best thing I have ever smoked in my life and now that it's been bred into extinction I think the world should mourn for the loss of this beautiful landrace.

The advancements in cannibus cultivation and smoking of buds over the past 50 years is definately epic.

And they say stoners are lazy...

I remember first smoking the green seedless skunk shit back in the early eighties and it was killer then as well as now . Back then it was usually brick weed we smoked and that was shitty then as it is now lol.

Wow, good shit indeed, you were there, you smoked it, now you can't remember what it was.

I did not get the good stuff. Mine was bud alright, it was obvious by the popping in the joint. The pot for the most part was rough trimmed tops, seeds included at $20 an oz in my area.
When the pot war got intense and the grow areas moved inside, plants got grown without pollination. Mainstream america discovers sinsemilla, "without seed" and has not looked back.

Buds were the good part even back then, they just came full of seeds. Fewer seeds was a better bag. Yeah, I did get bags without any seeds occasionally, but it was always tops at least.
These days I get a single request for pollinated sativa, the man claims it has properties he cannot get from unseeded bud or indica. He spent some time in Korea smoking eastern sativa, must have ruined his tastebuds.

Connoisseurs of pot realize that THC % is not the only determinate to what makes good pot. Other influences, such as CBD amount and curing methods play a roll also. I remember getting just as stoned with legacy strains. I also remember having to smoke more to get high . (maybe 3 hits instead of today's 1-2 hits) But I remember a better quality high - Perhaps because I was younger and more receptive to herb?

It was $30 / lid where I lived but that was for the Mexican brickweed. They pressed it, poured Coca-Cola over it to hold it together and that made it very harsh tasting. Strange, but the thing I miss even more about the Colombian is the flavor; it was so damn intense and incredible, like my taste buds were having an orgasm. You could roll out a hundred seeds easily from an oz. Damn it, now I'm going to have to get some landrace seeds and grow me some Colombian!! :) Great thread!

The stuff in the 60's was basically the entire plant dried and crumbled... We called it ditch weed. Doesn't even come close to the high that you smoke today.
Of course we had Hash and it was exzcellent, plus other stuff.

I took my first toke in 1970 when I was 13. The weed definately had buds....and lots of seeds....$40 for a 1/4 pound. Then the hawaiian sensi started flooding the east coast. $100 an OZ.

chiming in here... as a kid, yes lots of leaf bags in the urban areas (Denver). It took many years to realize how lucky I really was to grow up on the Western Slope of Colorado ('70s). "Paonia Bud" was the norm. Was like smokin' a Christmas tree. Lots of it everywhere as there were many "hippie" growers. I just remember that flavor and LMFAO!... sigh, good times

Ah, the good old days!
When we used to smoke every part if the plant except the seeds and stems, lol.

The simple fact is that your brain, brain stem and a few other organs contain a finite number of cannabinoid receptor cells. Some folks have lots of receptors, others not so many, determined by their genetic make-up. But for everyone it's a finite number. Once those cells receive the THC/CBD you inhale, you're done. You can't get any 'higher'. It's why no one ever ODs on weed, no matter what its advertised THC content. When you're high, your brain gradually 'digests' the THC/CBD you've inhaled, your high begins to wane, and you can 'refill' the receptor sites by inhaling some more THC/CBD. But you can only get so stoned.

With that in mind [no pun intended], it really doesn't matter which part of the plant you smoke, so long as it contains the THC, CBD and other cannabinoids found in various strains. Buds are obviously where the action is, but sugar leaf, fan leaf and even stems have the chemical entities we all enjoy. I got blasted back in the 1960s when I smoked whatever leaf we could get our hands on. It was usually the whole plant, dried and crumbled. There were some buds, or parts of buds; but it was mainly leaf, because the whole plant is predominantly leaf.

This is a little simplified, because there are a number of different cannabinoids besides just THC and CBD, and they lock onto different receptor sites. CBD, for example, goes primarily to the brain stem, where it can make us bleary-eyed and quite 'relaxed'. THC tickles brain sites responsible for sensory input [sights, sounds and taste], mood elevation and memory [formation and retrieval]. But the point is: You don't have more receptor cells just because you have more, or better, dope. All you have to work with are the cells God gave you [or Mom and Dad, if you prefer].

I'm like everyone else nowadays. I love buds. They smoke milder, they taste better and they pack way more punch, so you don't have to inhale as much. But leaves will make you giggle, make your food taste better, and make you bleary-eyed, just like bud. It's a Beer vs Champagne comparison -- not club soda vs Champagne.

im 55 yrs old & in my opinion the weed we had back then isnt as good or strong as what we have today like everything pot has evolved what i remember most from back then was how fun it was to say fuck the establishment frame of mind that was fed by the fellowship of meeting with your stoner buddies in the alley behind the school & blazin one up laughin & being young & careless in general & sometimes we would all pile into someones car & take the backroads to the river or some remote location not likely to be swooped on by the cops ... yeah those were the days now i grow modern strains indoors & even though its different its good all the same so to sum it up it was good then its still good now !
