wow...thanks for the responses...they do bring back some memories
ESPecially "Columbian GOLD"! I def remember that and also acapulco gold...they were like $5/more an ounce (an ounce was $15-20 and that was the only way we bought it).
And now that I think of it, yes, there were seeds quite often, so I guess we were getting bud tops, but definitely a lot of leaves.
The main difference though, was we would really get stoned, as in energetic and almost hallucinatory, as opposed to narcotic like body stone.
But we did smoke mostly leaves....I wonder if they were the now-scorned fan leaves?
Anyone remember smoking through homemade water pipes filled with wine?

I'm young(er), didn't take my first hit until the late '90s.

I appreciate hearing about the smoking experiences of those that came before me. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know, it seems to need more COWBELL. Good music in the 70's wasn't appreciated as much as it should have been because it was drowned out by that scourge DISCO

Started smoking weed around 1977 in the north east part of the USA....here's what I remember...

1) $40/oz and rolled approximately 60 joints out of it.
2) It had leaves, stems, seeds and various other debris in it. Rare to see any bud material.
3) It was dark brown in color and was most likely Mexican skank weed. It gave a full "body" stoned feeling.
4) Once every year or so we could get Panama Red or Acapulco Gold for $5/joint. Stuff was rolled like a needle.
5) "Home Grown" weed was the worst of the worst. Low potency and it gave you headaches. Some people sprayed it with hair spray to cover it's smell and increase the high. "Home Grown" weed was a nuisance that caused more "beat downs", thefts and problems.

Today's weed - "Da Bomb", nothing like it IMHO.

Absolutely!! In fact, I didn't know MJ had "bud". The only thing I recognized was the iconic "fan leaf". I well remember what some of the pot "back in the day" looked like and we were clearly smoking a lot of leaf. That has been my contention for the last few years as to why the pot today is supposedly higher in THC than the pot back then, but the best pot now does not even remotely compare to the best pot back then. I remember tripping my brains out on several strains, Colombian gold, Acapulco gold, Panama red, man those were just mind blowing and the more you smoked the higher you got.
its likely that the pot you smoked back in the day was far less potent but you were far, faaar less tolerant. I never smoked in the 60's or even the 90's, but when I was first smoking I would say that was more mindblowing than now, but not because it was better weed. Same for mushrooms. First few trips were life changing, but now its more like hanging out with an old friend.

High grade sativas flowered for many months in intense sunlight. Nothing like that now, but I smoke indicas mostly anyways, so no loss for me.

Quality of herb today is much better overall, but if you want tripped out sativas you are out of luck imo. Half the magic was very intense sun from around the equator region and the other was very long flowering strains of sativa. If you can find the seeds you can kind of recreate some of that. I grew out ACE Panama Red indoors and got a pretty good Colombian herb type experience from smoking it. Get a cmh or strong fluoro over them to give some uv.

About tolerance and that, I got high as fuck off good regular Mexican comersh. Lots of leaves or powder, guess it was leaves. I got ripped off of it sometimes, as good as today with sinse buds. By the 80's there was so much Cali redbud the quality imports went away. Most of the pot grown in Mexico and south America is now hybrids. Shorter times flowering equal more money. I think they may be able to get 2 harvests in a year.
